Description The Portuguese population is more and more aged, since there stopped being renovation of generations in 1982 and Portugal is today one of the countries of the world with lower synthetic rates of fertility. In the last 30 years we lose around a million young persons, between zero and 14 years old, and we gained around 900 thousand old ones, in other words, persons with more than 65 years.
Around 80 % of the Portuguese population will be dependent and aged in the 2050 year. A tendency that accompanies the break of the tax of birth rate that has been coming to lessen from 1990. In the next 15 years there’s going to be a break of the most young population and in 2030 around 60 % of the total of the Portugueses is going to have more than 40 years of age.

According to the OECD a country is old when it has a percentage superior to 7% of old persons in his general population. The percentage of the old persons in the total of the Portuguese population is 17.3 %.

The stats are the same here...and our government doesn't do anything to improve things. Pregnant women still get fired, kindergartens are expensive...it is scary.
Anyway, great moment captured, nevertheless.

I did not know that about Portugal... Germany has a similar problem. I believe life in Europe has become too stressful for families to get more children, or even get any at all.

Btw, if Amália Rodrigues were still alive she would have most probably been close to her age and looked like her... in private, of course

Gosto particularmente desta foto.

NunoCanha In reply to Ullises [2012-09-21 05:49:23 +0000 UTC]

Everything what you mentioned is exactly the same in Italy and Croatia and as the things stand at this moment, it looks that it will not be much better, sadly. That aging of populations in many countries of Europe will have (and it has already) a big influence on development, migrations, economy, and at the end, on the culture and historical movements of those countries. I agree with you, the crisis and population aging are part of the circle, but I think that crisis can't be solved without solving problem of aging.

It's better to comment the photo, because it's a very beautiful one. I like the old lady, her expression, she is great! And she is right if we can't solve this crazy world crisis, it's better to take our broom and clean our front door

We have the same problem in Italy, it's an economic problem, to have a kid is expensive and we already have difficulties leaving our parent's home because life's too expensive here. I just heard in the news that 60% of the population under 30 still lives with parents. It's sad but in a way also good, we are over populating this planet and destroying it... we are like a virus for this planet, that's the sad truth.

Well, "we" always develop the place we're in, but have a nomad soul.
Soon, without epidemics and wars, the Blue Dot will be too small for the specie that has no natural defenses, tooth or claws, no fur, no scales, can only hold breath for a while and has a temperature resistant from 0º to 40º. Only brain and language to depend on.

What's funny is that in a not so distant future we'll probably be the "aliens" invading new planets to colonize and fuck up its resources and then move on in search of another planet...
