Well I use linseed oil so it doesn't take much to dry, I like working fast, sometimes I even use japan dryer

Eh no...I have heard of water based oil before but to tell you the truth it sounds like crap..Japan dryer when you mix it with your linseed oil makes your painting dry in 2 hours..of course it is bad for it bacause your painting will be cracking in 10 years..

that sucks. Would a matt varnish not help prolong the inevitable?

Ah I think not..It would crack as well...Varnish can only be applied after the paint is completely dry and it takes between 6 months to a year...
