Description For information: It's 100% traditional medium made picture.

There are so many really wonderful entries for that contest in majority done by digital medium… so I decided to go with traditional medium
I could do in digital, but I thought it would be really fun to take a challenge for myself doing in traditional medium game-based illustration of biggest elemental boss and I wanted to give a little support to traditional art, which is not much appreciated today amongst the digital creations. It was truly challenging to do with real media, took me really, really long time especially creating self-made textures! But it was really experiencing to work on such like that.

If anyone is curious about design, I'll explain: I did pretty careful research for making a design for my colossus to represent it as earth colossus plus with using not-common elements which are representative to earth.
Design is based on raw earth physic/biological elements.
That "electricy" is not actually thunderous electric, it's actually electromagnetic power. Every planet and earth has electromagnetic power, and even with precious stones there is energy (technically that energy is not visible at all, but I was thinking... to show it, since it'd show more life and power of it's beast. I think, without it.. it would look like… just a rock. But I want something to move it. )
generally it's concept of a moon shaped ancient colossus, with it's electromagnetic power can bring and rise the rocks and earth dust, shape into arms and any earth related elements around it- inspiration comes from scencist article when the energy on planet fades, planet dies in space.

medium used: colored pencils, watercolor paints, alcoholic paint, alcohols, airbrush, ink, markers and self made textures. slightly adjusted in PS to bring natural colors after scanning and clean scanner's dirt. Over of a week of work.

It's nice to see somesome take the time and effort to work in the traditional mediums, so many people claims to be artists when all they use is the in-built functions of a computer applying pre-made textures and effects and great undo button.

Love the work here and I'm sure when you held this up when you'd finished you felt that great satisifaction of knowing the paint/inks staining your fingers had gone to create a wonderful piece of art.

A much overused saying these days, but this is keeping it real.

Totally agree with the Zelda comment - my first thought was something along the lines of "I'd be so scared to have to battle this thing in some videogame"...
I love that you did this in traditional media (I've been watching you quite a while btw). Way to disqualify yourself from the get go, though. I've yet to see a traditional media entry make it in one of these contests. (The traditional entries that made it to the semis this time were the two sculptures, which is an enitrely different beast altogehter, literally.) Correct me if I'm wrong. This is one of the times I'd love to be wrong.

I agree, it makes me to think for zelda boss... somehow ^^

Ah yes I saw. Sculptures are in general quite popular getting on semi finals I noticed on the most contests. But I never really seen for 2D traditional art, so for that I was aiming. But if they didn't pick, its ok because with my design I have way too strange taste! I dont really fit for RIFT at all. Wish some other 2D trad art talented artist would join that contest.

Hej, sorry for the late reply. DeviantArt kind of stopped working on Firefox and I just realized I might as well try another browser (et voilΓ )...

That's my first time seeing a sculpture on a contest, but then I'm not a regular (contest watcher/participant/whatever). It's a shame about the traditional 2D art. I don't get it. Maybe it's because if the work wins, they'd have to get the original (physical) copy to do a really good scan or something? I can see how that would be troublesome. On the other hand, considering what kind of entries usually make the top positions (in the 3~4 contests I've seen) ... these judges are simply blind, hate creativity and ... aah, well. Guess, unlike the community the judges aren't artists. That would explain the completely different "community choices" (if there are any).

Personally, I recently sorted my watch-list and realized I'm pretty much disinterested in most CG art out there. And there is pretty amazing stuff. Still, I love even the crudest watercolor pic more than all the famed CG stuff together. Weird. And I just came to that realization after buying a Wacom tablet. *face palm* ...

NovaEden In reply to pallanoph [2011-06-22 18:28:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you a lot, Pallanoph!
It was pain in ass but texturizing is WAY more fun than with digital since you can use nearly every object to experiment making textures. With digital I feel like if I want to archeive rocky texture, I simply take from google, or CG textures and create texture :/ with traditional you are FORCED to draw EVERY pattern of texture such like structure, right shading- but you learn drawing from scrap

I must just tell you how simply amazed I am at your work. It brightens my day and makes me so extremely happy to know all of your stuff or a huge majority of it is all traditional. It's people like you who keep true art alive!
Real art is the art done without an undo button.
Your whole gallery feels me with aw, shock, and undying joy at the things you are able to accomplish.
True skillz, you have them and make wonderful master pieces with them!
