Description
The Shadow sat inside the entrance to his den, massive paws tucked under his fluffy chest as he gazed out at the camp. The sun was barely past sunrise, and the dense foliage covered most light from entering. The only bit of light peeking into the clearing came from the thicket. The air still held a slight chill to it, and it had rained the night before. The ground was damp, with the trees sheltering some of the clearing. It was calm, cool, and peaceful in the camp.
Shadow could see the medicine cat den from where he lay. Root and Rumblepaw were sitting next to each other, while Mistyshine and Mudstripe were gathered around as well. They had some poultice on their pelts, having been treated for some scratches and minor wounds from the medicine cat and his apprentice. Larkstrike had some worse wounds, presumidly from a dog attack from his previous clan. He was laying in front of Rumblepaw, paws tucked, as the apprentice was chewing some herbs for another poultice.
“When you’re done, make sure to part the fur,” Root explained “Just to make sure you can see the wound clearly.”
“I barely have any fur to begin with.” Larkstrike said. The brown tom’s thin fur wasn’t the best for cold Shaded Clan life, but he already seemed to be adapting well. He rested his head on his paws to rest as Rumblepaw took the mushy herbs and placed them on the wound between his shoulders.
Shadow could see Mudstripe looking uncomfortable around the medicine cats. Rumblepaw had brought the poor warrior to the camp and explained the situation. Shadow could almost remember the odd conversation he had with the dusky-brown tabby tom.
-----------------------
“Perfection?” Shadow asked.
Mudstripe nodded, heading hanging slightly. His whole body was drooping from exhaustion. Rumblepaw was sitting beside him, looking nervous for the stranger. Shadow almost asked the medicine cat apprentice to leave, but maybe the herbal knowledge of the apprentice would be useful if this cat collapsed.
“Sometimes when something doesn’t look right, or is disorganized, I have to fix it… or it won’t leave my mind. Even then, sometimes I have to fix it… over and over.” Mudstripe meowed.
Shadow inhaled deeply, thinking about that whole idea; he liked being organized as well, but Rumblepaw explained that Mudstripe had been awake for who knows how long, organizing the same leafy clearing for hours. The whole “over and over” part made Shadow wonder if this cat had organized the pile, was dissatisfied, then fixed it again.
“Tell me more, if you can.”
Mudstripe’s eyes were closed, as if he was thinking hard. It was only then did Shadow realize he was mumbling “over and over” to himself. Rumplepaw nudged the tom’s shoulder and he blinked, opening his eyes in realization.
“Oh,” he said “Sorry…. Sometimes certain words… I repeat as well. It's not always the same-same-same word, but I say it until it feels right- right-right-right.”
Everytime Mudstripe repeated his words, Shadow noticed that his pronunciation became slightly louder, clearer, and more insistent. God, that might get annoying after a while, but… Mudstripe wasn’t hurting anyone. If anything, he was hurting himself. Mudstripe looked exhausted and still incredibly nervous.
“Alright. I don’t want to push you anymore with this conversation. Rumblepaw, take Mudstripe to the Warriors den. Introduce him to the others, but let him sleep.” Shadow ordered.
Rumblepaw dipped his head. The two toms moved to stand, but Shadow’s ears perked in sudden realization, “Wait. Mudstripe, you said the other clans you were in tried to use herbs to cure you?”
Mudstripe visibly flinched, as if Shadow had tried to lash out at him. He nodded, “Yes… Yes, they tried to use herbs to heal my mind, make me compliant… I don’t want to be like this. I want to control-control-control my thoughts… but I don’t want to be experimented on with herbal mixtures.”
Shadow nodded, “Alright. Take him to the Warrior’s den. Let him rest.”
---------------------------
As Shadow continued to watch the cats, Mistyshine moved closer to Mudstripe, nudging his flank with her muzzle. Mudstripe laid down where he was and began to share tongues with the gray tabby warrior. He wondered if the two of them could become a couple, if Mudstripe’s ways didn’t push Mistyshine away. She seemed patient enough.
The sight was interrupted when Sorrelpool and Brokenkit came out of the nursery. The black kit was neatly groomed, but he bounced on his paws in excitement. Sorrelpool was trying to smooth a tuft of scruff back into place, her belly swaying from the kits she was carrying. She was a good foster mother for Brokenkit, having found him when he wandered off from camp while Shadow was patrolling. He immediately let the she-cat join his clan, seeing that she would become a dedicated warrior.
Shadow crawled out of his den, turning and jumping up onto the large boulder above him. The tree growing from the crevices enveloped him in shadow, “Let all Shaded Clan cats gather beneath the Leader’s Tree for a clan meeting!”
As Shadow sat on the ledge, he watched the clan gather. Root and Rumblepaw stayed near the medicine cat clearing with Larkstrike, but Mistyshine padded over to the rock, with Mudstripe pressing close to her as they walked. Sorrelpool and Brokenkit came over as well, with the kitten bouncing on his paws.
“Cats of The Shaded Clan,” Shadow meowed “The first cat I found to join this clan was Brokenkit. He was young, lost, and didn’t even have a name. I took him in as my own son, and Sorrelpool raised him well as a surrogate mother. He has reached his sixth moon and is ready to finally contribute to the clan that took him in.”
Shadow glanced down and saw that Brokenkit’s eyes were shining in admiration. Shadow purred at the sight, “Brokenkit, from this moment on until you’ve earned your warrior name, you shall be known as… Brokenpaw. Since many of our current warriors are still new to the clan, I will be your mentor.”
Shadow leapt down from the boulder, standing at its base while Brokenpaw padded up to him. Nothing was said as the apprentice and foster father gazed into each other’s eyes. Shadow couldn’t be more proud of the young tom. He finally leaned down and the two touched noses, signaling their new bond as apprentice and mentor.
“Brokenpaw! Brokenpaw! Brokenpaw!”
The clan chanted the apprentice’s new name, and they rose to greet the apprentice. Sorrelpool bounded over and began to cover her foster son with licks, purring loudly. Mistyshine and Mudstripe rubbed their bodies against him affectionately, welcoming him. Larkstrike, Root, and Rumblepaw came over and did the same.
Shadow felt his heart swell with love and pride for his growing clan. Already, the dynamics were being bound in love and loyalty to each other. The Shaded Clan was becoming stronger every day.
Brokenkit has reached his sixth moon and is ready to become an apprentice. There's no one The Shadow trusts more than himself to become his mentor.
