Description Hey guys! Do any of you remember this drawing? nonetoon.deviantart.com/art/Wi…

Well, I decided to redraw it in a new digital painting style I've been playing around with! I used the same style for my pictures Little Family: nonetoon.deviantart.com/art/Li… , and Under the Sea: nonetoon.deviantart.com/art/Un… . I really like it, and I'll probably be using for a lot of my big works!

I really liked the original drawing and idea, but I noticed a few mistakes and the proportions and character designs were kind of....eh. So, I'm at it again! It's really cool to see how much I've improved in just a few months! Let me know what you guys think!

Also, if any of you guys are interested in buying a print of this, I'm selling it on Etsy: www.deviantart.com/users/outgo…

Just out of curiosity, do you use Paint Tool Sai or Photoshop for this?  I would assume this might be SAI because of it's distinctive tendency to blend like that, but if it's Photoshop, definitely have to commend you since Photoshop is a little harder to blend with than SAI.

I haven't been your watcher for very long, nor have I gotten the chance to extensively look through your gallery yet, but this definitely looks like an improvement from your previous rendition.  The characters loss a little of the "cute" style, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's really an improvement that everything looks a lot less flat now.   Express also feel more lively.  Particularly, I love the expressions of the Lion, the Witch, the Scarecrow, and the Wizard.

To give some constructive criticism though, I think the highlights could have definitely been pushed a little further and maybe the shadows.  Most people visually favor high contrasts when it comes to lighting.  Particularly the Lion could have his lighting improved, because his lighting looks the most flat in my opinion.  The dots on his body should also be more notably affected by the lighting since it's a coloration on his body.

To be brutally honest though, I'm not exactly sure where your light source is because the way you lighted some of the characters contradict each other.  If you tell me where your intended light source was and its color (if it has any), please let me know and I can give you more advice on that.  I'm personally assuming it was the green dot above the text.

Lastly, the lighting on the robot calls for a little more.  In reality, metal is VERY reflective to light, so the contrasts between light and shadow should be noticeably greater than any of the other characters with said lighting lines to be very sharp.  Similar to the axe, but that could be improved too.

Overall, I do appreciate all of your effort though.  Again, I can see how you're trying avidly to improve yourself and that is to be admired.  Hope I didn't sound too harsh!

Oh! I almost forgot, I used Photoshop for this, if you were still wondering.

Don't worry, you weren't harsh! I do have a lot of problems with lighting, usually I just eyeball it but it looks like I'll need to get it down completely. I didn't really add deep shadows because I wanted it to look a little lighter, but I can see some places were I could have made it darker, especially the lion! He had to be the hardest, mostly because his main color was purple, and even though I chose different purples they all look to similar in the end. I tried adding the green dots in his mane to contrast it a little bit, but I feel like I didn't really make some of them dark or light enough.

Also, about the Tin Man, I'm not very good with metal lighting and I really didn't want to mess up the picture. I really do need to improve on metal, though, and if you have any tips on metal or now any tutorials I would love to hear/see them!

Thanks for the critique, I really appreciate it!

I always recommend references to lighting, if you're not sure or just want to double check on that.  Perhaps even better, second opinions.  You really need to have a trained eye for it to use without references and honestly, that's hard for a lot of people, even professionals can still have some difficulty.

In my opinion, based on a bunch of tutorials that I collect in my favorites section, these three would be my recommended ones for metal.  One covers, armor and another one covers a bullet.  Although it applies to said things, you can still use the techniques stated in the tutorials to use in how you can approach painting metal in general.  A lot of how you paint metal is situation in my opinion.  Lighting, what state you want your metal to be in, etc., are all things that need to be taken into account.

Metal and Jewel Tutorial:  gallantart.deviantart.com/art/…
-Maybe not the best metal tutorial, but I think it's good for getting the general idea across if the other two tutorials feel a bit overwhelming at first.
Armor Tutorial: gallantart.deviantart.com/art/…
-Great for metal in general, but especially when you want to show it as aged/battleworn metal.  You can still make great metal without going through the steps to show how to achieve worn effects.
Bullet Tutorial (have to download to see the tutorial): gallantart.deviantart.com/art/…
-I really only think of using this to help achieve really reflective, "new" metal, and/or a strong light source.  This undoubtedly helps with metal that you want high contrasts for.

I'm always happy to offer some help when I can.  If you want me to look over a deviation for you before you submit it on DA in the future, feel free to submit the "draft" in your sta.sh, and send the link to me through a note and I'll give you my opinions and critiques on them.
