The buildings have an incredibly sad vibe about them so your thoughts are quite fitting.

This reminds me of a documentary I watched on Chernobyl. They were allowed to briefly tour the buildings. There are striking similarities. Fantastic job.

I've seen that and it's incredible.Β I've seen a drone tour as well and it is so haunting to see it from above.Β What makes it particularly haunting is that people had to grab what they could and leave immediately so you see the signs of life everywhere with no life...

That's what they captured in the documentary. It's awful. Imagine leaving a lot if not all of your prized possessions behind only to later find out you can never return to get them back.

Not too weird actually. Pennhurst was an asylum and like many in it's time it was overcrowded and understaffed which was a recipe for disaster.Β There are a lot of pretty horrifying stories that came out of Pennhurst, some of them confirmed in the documentary called "Suffer the Little Children" - you can find it on YouTube if you're interested
