I don't know how I missed this, but your shading (even without this depth you say is missing) looks incredibly soft and delicate!
What I suggest is Photoshop CS6's "auto tone." Or er maybe it has another name? I use it for my traditional pieces and it's amazing--all I need to do is auto tone and then it's perfect. If you don't have PSCS6 I would gladly run something of yours through it if you need.

Sadly, I lost photoshop with the death of my old laptop haha, but I'll look into it
Oh really? That would be awesome, at least just to see what it does once.
