In retrospect it probably came out creepier than I meant when I started. But then again there is something about dolls and their dead eyes which might make this inevitable.

true, true. what is it about the facsimile of babies, and other innocuous things, that can make them appear sinister?

I am not sure- there is something deep-seated in us, I think, but I cannot quite imagine what the root of that dark archetype is. I do think it is some sort of innate archetype though since the implied horror of the glassy eyed doll does seem to cut across cultures and times. Well, Western cultures anyway. I do not mean the modern "Chucky is an evil doll" - Chucky I think plays to the archetype and leverages it. There is a similar sinister echo to clowns and carnival masks too. But why we would carry this almost at the genetic level completely baffles me.
Unless, in the twists of our DNA, there is a tribal memory of visitors from other galaxies - and they were glassy eyed cherubic midgets with giant red noses and orange afros and had huge feet and sprouted feathers around their eyes.
But probably that didn't happen.
