Description Ok, so the last lightstudy was awful and since I don't want a bunch of mad Tom Welling fans rampaging onto me, I decided to do another one using a photo reference this time.

**** SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! ****
This is the same episode as the last one, another shot I thought was interesting colourwise (the background was beautiful in motion).
It's Clarke Luthor with Tess in a restaurant.
**** END ALERT!!! END ALERT!!! ****

I had the photoreference in a window to the side. No colourpicking from the photoreference, only guesswork (otherwise you never learn). It's amazing how much eyebrows do... it wasn't looking like Tom at all, then I nudged the eyebrows down slightly and voila. Also, he has a lopsided grin (Tom Wellings acting evil!).

Hopefully this will appease the fan girls and get to live another day!

oh nice colouring and you only used photoreference on a window to the side? good work, most just draw on top of photos and casualy predend they coloured it on free hand
this is defently somehting I could need to practice on and it looks quite fun even for drawing a human^^

Actually, I think most serious artists draw with the photoreference to the side. Unless they're warming up. When I do anatomy sketches using photos (nude omg!), I sometimes do a few traced (real quick, no more than a minute each) just to warm up. Then I start sketching with the reference to the side.

The plus side to using a real human/object is that you see the volumes in 3D. But photoreferences for practice is cheap and almost as good.

yeaI usually use photoreference of sorts myself though tha's mostly just for finding a interesting pose since I've adopted a rather cartoonish colouring style. still your drawings do makes me wanne try something more challenging^^
heh I know of a guy who INSISTED I needed to trace more and that was "God gift to artists since everything came out looking better if you traced and you"learned so much from it but yea I also like to trace for warming up on something I'm not familiar with

Well, if you're tracing color from a photo and you THINK about what you're doing, then sure, you'll learn stuff. But that's for practicing. I mean, you can use photos in your work, that's another deal... like if you're doing concept art and you have to draw a whole city in ruins, there's no reason why you shouldn't take a photo of a city and draw the destruction on top of it.
