Description Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can…

And in this image, a spider can get his fucking ass handed to him by the Green Goblin. I’m a big fan of both of the recent Spider-man movies, and this image was kind of my tribute to the first one. I took some liberties with the costume (changed the shape of the eyes, turned the spider symbol upside-down, etc.), but I really tried to stay true to the original comic version of Spidey. As much as I loved the movies, I’ve always hated the movie version of the costume because there’s no way in hell that a high school kid could have made that fucking thing. It looks great, but if it took Hollywood costume designers a few hundred man hours to make, there’s no fucking way Peter Parker could have pulled it off.

I chose to only hint at the Green Goblin because I wanted to make the image about Spider-Man, and give the feeling that he may be in over his head, but there’s no way he’s going to give up. Although, maybe I should have painted the goblin in there to cover up some of that brick wall which was a bitch and a half to paint. Although I’ve really got my technique down for painting bricks, and maybe I’ll post a tutorial if anyone is interested?

95% Acrylic paint, with some effects work and touch-ups in Photoshop (mainly just the shadow of The Green Goblin).

That scene of Spider-Man getting his ass handed to him by the Green Goblin scared the shit out of me when I was little, now it haunts me everytime I look at my childhood hero :/

yea best part of that scene was when spidey pulled the wall down onto goblin with the zero fucks given face

That was perhaps the only part of that scene that didn’t make me cringe. Still, it won’t compensate for that horrifying minute and a half of my favorite childhood superheroes brutally getting the shit kicked out of him, unless I stick a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger just to get it out of my freakin’ head.

I think that just hinting at the Goblin through shadow was perfect for this! Very scary.

Re: Spidey's facial expression - to me, it looks like he's grinning through the blood, and if that doesn't sum up "Spider-Man in a fight" then I don't know what does.

Not sold on Spidey's expression. He looks all serious and gritty and determined and ready to kick some asses. Somehow, that doesn't feel like him.

This is awesome. Love the shadow and a broken Spider-man. Implies awesomeness rather than shoving it in your face. haha

If I had a tenth of your skill I'd be satisfied, I don't even know how something as awesome (and I use it the biblical sense) as this is possible with acrylics, if you could make a tutorial to showcase your technique that would be beyond biblical

Thank you! I actually put together a 2-page acrylic tutorial a while back that you can check out here:

tutorial page 1 = [link]
tutorial page 2 = [link]

It was done for a different painting but I used many of the same techniques so it should be at least a little helpful.

Happy holidays and thanks again!

this is so awsum, i feel the same way about the suit in the movies. i still like them, but yeah theres no way a teenager who lives with his aunt in queens working as a freelance photographer could get those materials lol
ur interpretation is cool too, but who come you turned the spider symbol upside down?

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to Clark-and-Frank [2008-04-20 22:14:54 +0000 UTC]

Beacuse with the Spider-symbol upside down it looks like a spider hanging on a webline from Spidey's chin. It's a pretty cool look even though you don't get the best example of it here.

Stinger22005 [2008-02-18 22:15:26 +0000 UTC]

I love it, but I have to say, out of all the things in the movies and the comics that you find impossible, it's pretty funny that you pointed out the suit instead of all the other crazy stuff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to Stinger22005 [2008-02-18 23:46:31 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

My issues with the suit tie into the whole idea around "suspension of disbelief". We all know that Spider-man is fake, but we're willing to look past that and buy into the idea just to be entertained. But the only way we'll ever be able to stop from thinking "well this is a bunch of fake crap" when we're watching the movies is if everything else in the film is completely normal and pedestrian as we all expect it to be, and the only thing out of the ordinary is the fact that Spidey has super powers... That's what builds the illusion. So I'm willing to buy that Peter Parker now has spider-powers but not that a highschool kid has a 5-man special effects team making his $50,000 spider-suit.
