That would be bits of the light coming in from the side matched with skin reflections. 
I like the blocking out technique, but I need to find another way to do things. This technique feels natural, but my coulors are ending up pretty dull. I think I might just skip the B&W step and go straight to colour. I need to ask *Fealasy , thats the kind of colour I would love to get, I can do it with this technique, but theres to much re-colouring and that wastes time.
What technique (or mix of) have you been using?

I only use black and white to sketch with and to plot out where my lighting and general composition. But if I'm doing something quick I just go straight for colour. I used the mixer pallet a lot. C:
I like to use big blocks of colour at first then go in with a smaller brush the darker I get. etc.
Depends on what im doing as to how I paint. Everything requires its own style me thinks.

O_o....you want me to suggest jesus..I feel far too beneath this to be suggesting anything...
However what DID jump to my attention, was the arms. All the shading is so smooth everywhere else, but in the main arms its still a bit...rough?
Because you aren't going for a realistic image I can't really comment because I'm not sure what you had in your head but it sort of looks odd to me.
Aside from that, once again....this rocks.
Your work usually does. I like that I can see in your work how much you enjoy your work and how much effort you put in

i think it looks quite lovely, the tones are so smooth!
if we're going to get picky, i'd say a little more definition in the earlobe at the left side, and maybe the very edge of the jaw on that side as well would help, just because it starts to look a bit blurry, and some harder lines in the hair at the bottom, to make it mesh better with the nice detail in the hair at the top and front
also the top left hand seems a little less finished that all of the others, but maybe thats just me

Suggestions? I don't know. Maybe improve the lips and eyes a bit more.
The shading is very smooth and professionally done.
