It was a cold, cold winter in New York City when Burne Thompson offered members of his staff a chance to go down to sunny California to cover a surfing contest. While April O'Neil normally finds that sort of assignment boring as shell, she jumped at the chance for sun and sand instead of snow and snow. Of course, there's a catch. She has to at least do the commercial spots for it in a swimsuit. Better to encourage the fun side of it. She wasn't fond of the idea itself, but decided it wouldn't be the end of the world. But she drew the line at the bikini they originally wanted her to wear(she suspected Vernon put them up to it, since it was so small she'd get fired if she wore it on TV, if not arrested). She compromised for a one piece that wouldn't get her kicked off the air.
