Carey sighed. RJ would pull this kind of stunt, taking the cruiser without him. He’d just have to track the kid down.

He jogged to the intersection where RJ usually dropped him off, impressed with himself when he realized he wasn’t winded. It surprised him to see a different, bored-looking officer—not one he recognized—standing in his usual spot.

He took a step toward the officer when he saw commotion around a nearby bus stop bench. He pushed through the group of awestruck onlookers and discovered the object holding their attention.

Underneath the bench lay a dead body—his own.
