His thoughts began to wander as they always would -- especially on days like today when the sun was beginning to bear down and the elusive turtles were sleeping in some hidden cranny of the lake.

Somehow his thoughts would find their way back to his youth -- those magical days of fighting the Americans and slipping in and out of Hanoi. There was a beautiful woman there that he had fallen in love with. What had became of her? Did she ever make it out of the brothel? She is probably a grandmother now, wrinkled like an old prune.

"Does she ever think of me?," he said to himself.

As the time before, and the time before this, and a thousand other time befores, his question was answered with nothing but the constant gentle rock of the boat on the water.

Scowling at himself he let out a big sigh.

"You old fool, get back to your work or the family won't eat tonight."
