So cool, I love the super low lighting values in this, I've always had a thing for really dark reds and this is freakin' gorgeous!

Thanks, a lot of my paintings are quite dark, hopefully not too dark to be discernible. They pop better on a black screen or a dark wall, light grey will have to do!

Thanks, that's the purpose of this brush style I'm trying to develop.

Well, although I'm generally a semi-realist (the definition of this style is varied), I tend to get caught up in the precision of my details. Like, I might spend more than an hour on one square inch of a painting. The results can be good and this OCD kind of defines a lot of my work, but it also requires me to constantly monitor the overall vibe and appearance of a painting (zoom in, zoom out, retouch, overlay, etc., etc.). For example, I will often go back and mess up that square inch of background so it will fit with the rest of the painting.
The style I'm going for is more impressionistic and expressionistic, a more fluid work flow. Somewhere between these 30 minute spit paints you see people doing and my more time consuming, usual style. I think this technique is more interesting in ways. It leaves more to the imagination and results in a better vibe for the viewer. My goal is to refine that happy medium between my styles and create something recognizable (and hopefully pleasing) as my own.

I really like this one. Would be a great seen in a dark fantasy film (wish there were more of those).

So grainy and gritty, love it, it's "simple" but it tells you enough, the red and black are prominent and that's great, love the hint of skulls on the ground!

Thanks.
The painting or the poem? I tried to keep both simple.

OOh, I LIKE this one! And the poem.. pupils dilate... it sends little shivers through me..
I love that it is so rich and dark, and how with a very limited colour palate you gave it so much texture.
I am now wondering about the story behind this - so many options!
Weighing in on the background colour - I think it helps enhance a pic like this, makes it richer.

Glad you like it, the poem flowed better in my head, it needs some music.
I definitely wanted texture in this one, being monochromatic might make that more of a focal point.
I tried a greyscale background but it made the pick look too "designy" for lack of a better term.

I really like the dark hues and the brooding nature of it. The hooded figure is very menacing, and I like the poem that goes with

Thank you, thank you.
Yeah, other sites have a darker theme or allow you to choose a color even. A thick frame might be an option sometimes.
