I usually do use reference. For this particular piece, I did not (which I think shows...could be better if I would use some imho).
Reference use is absolutely okay and industry standard; the main thing is you should not marry to them, meaning copy paste style. Use them as a guide, use multiply of them, use your own photos. I cannot know everything how it looks like, how it works, or what was the 1500's fashion in Germany...I need to look them up, get inspiration, observe them, maybe doing a one to one copy, to learn that particular thing, then I am free to go to use my imagination. At some point you won't need that much refs and you can test you memory and knowledge but using one will always aid you.

Yeah I do get that I'm definitely for the use of reference. I was just wondering since I use ref often and was wondering if other artists do so as well, even on their originals. I agree with all of the above!Β
