Description
The approaching sound of boots across the marble floor makes Kay's ears twitch with awareness, breaking his concentration on the sentence he was writing. He stills himself, sucking in a deep breath. His personal work time has been interrupted, yet again. How silly of him for even hoping that Bob's masquerade would keep him occupied for the entire night. Truth be told, Kay had been hoping the vast supply of wines and spirits sitting in the cellar would at least have Bob blissfully off in a stupor somewhere. Kay silently scolds himself for underestimating his partner's resilience.

"And how is my dove tonight?"

There isn't a hint of slur in his speech. Kay isn't sure whether he should be pleased Bob had abstained from drinking those awful tasting liquors that tended to linger in his mouth when they kiss, or disappointed. He looks up from the thick journal, quill held in mid-stroke, and sees Bob leaning against the shelving. Through the dim palette of candlelight and the glow of the moon, Kay makes out his partner's striking red eyes easily. A grin adorns his face, and Bob turns to pluck a book from the shelf, sauntering over as he opens the book to a random page, and pretends to read.

"I'm busy," Kay finally replies, frowning when he realizes he had blotched the word with excessive ink. From his peripheral, he sees Bob round the table, sidling up next to him as he continues to feign his studiousness. "I thought you'd still be in the ballroom."

"I missed you too much," he says, leaning over to kiss the tip of Kay's ear. "Shall we take a promenade in the gardens? It's a full moon tonight."

An idea strikes Kay. He just may be able to finish his researches tonight. He turns to Bob, taking the book from his hands. "I'm almost through with this map," he says, teasing the ends of the ribbon falling from the rose on Kay's suit, "how about you prepare a drink for me and I'll meet you at the gazebo?" He sees Bob raise his eyebrows, a look of interest on his face. Perfect, Kay thinks, the pavilion is in the center of the gardens, and Bob will surely take that unspoken promise of intimacy. Even Kay fails to finish his work in those fifteen minutes, at least he can be assured Bob would most likely down the drink in impatience and be contented in the gardens for another five. As if sealing the deal, Kay leans up to kiss him.

Bob makes a pleased sound, and watches for several moments as Kay resumes his work, diligently studying the maps before writing his notes. After a while, he backs away from Kay, who silently celebrates his privacy. That is, until the sound of chair legs scraping against the floor echos through the enormous library jolts him from his writing and a warm body envelops him from the back.

Kay makes a small noise, the pointed tip of the quill making a scrawled black line on the page.

"I think you need a break now, Dove," Bob suggests, running his hand up Kay's side as the other toys with the first button on Kay's thick cardigan. His hand is quick, getting three buttons undone before Kay could even reattach the first. Kay forces himself to ignore the warmth of Bob's fingers touching his bare stomach.

"No, I'm fine, I'm almost done," Kay says frantically, batting away the hand teasing his navel. The books and map laid out on the desk suddenly seem so distant.

Unconvinced, Bob pushes aside the fur collar draped over Kay's shoulder and plants a kiss on his neck. He relishes the small sigh that escapes his partner.

Seeing his chance to privacy quickly dissipating, he nudges back against Bob, looking with a scowl at the sly face inches away from his. He hopes the warmth in his face isn't visible in the poor lighting. "Your Captain won't be pleased if this entry isn't completed by dawn," he murmurs, hoping to tip the situation in his favor with some guilt inducing words.

"The Captain will be pleased with whatever we give him," comes the answer, hot against Kay's ear. The hand on his stomach drops to the leather belt holding the sweater together, undoing it with practiced precision. "He won't complain once I tell him about the Lieutenant's affair with the enemy."

At this, Kay freezes. "What?"

"Surely, Kay, you would have known tonight's party was not for me," Bob says matter-of-factly, "why do you think I haven't a sip in me? Because I needed to pay attention to my guests this time."

As Kay takes in the sudden news of the military scandal, Bob takes the feathered pen from his hand and turns him so they face one another. Kay looks up and sees his partner's face free of any distress. Inside, he must be priding himself on calling out the mole.

"I still need to complete this report for the Captain," Kay says. He notices Bob ponder this for several seconds, before he leans down to kiss him again. He presses himself against his tall partner, loving the warmth against his exposed stomach. When Bob begins to move away, Kay stops him, looping his arms over the ornate shoulder guards to hold the two of them close. "But after a break," Kay finishes.

A satisfied grin spreads itself across Bob's fair visage, and he settles himself into the chair behind him, pulling Kay's lithe body into his lap as they meet in a passionate kiss.
