I love the lines showing depth. The scratchiness reminds me of Junji Ito and it gives so much depth the way you layered them.

Thank you for the kind comparison ( and the watch/favorites! )Β  Β  When making lines there is so much to consider, though most people just use them to describe light and dark.Β  Often overlooked, the lines can also help describe form, texture and direction.Β  It's a lot of responsibility for just a simple line

Β  Thanks for the kind words! About 20 years ago I was really into lines, particularly with pen & ink on scratchboard.Β  A lot of people will use their lines to only build up value, but I find it is far more effective if each line is considered.Β  While still providing a value, it can also help define the form by contouring over the shape.Β  Even better than that, they can also subliminally control the viewer's eye to direct it about the page.Β  I highly recommend Berni Wrightson's Frankenstein to anyone really serious about linework.

Excellent!! Β  Berni is a genius and those illustrations are worth studying.Β  Not that every line is far from a random mark on the page, each element works like a road map to move your eye where he wants to.Β  There are even 'detour sign' kind of shapes to redirect you eye so it doesn't leave the page.Β  The more you study them the more you discover, it should be required material in art schools.

I agree with you. Especially the page where it's raining, 99% vertical lines and it's just.. Genius! I love it!!

Thank you for that recommendation my friend. As an aspiring illustrator my first target is to master linework. I just love seeing individua lines merging together into such intricate and gritty artwork. more power to you!

Thank you!Β  I rarely do line art these days, my concern was too much busy mark making and not enough variety or rest for the viewers' eyes.Β  I also wanted to be sure the eye read as a different surface than the tentacles.

nice even if difference between the thumbnail and the full size is stunning, more oldschool looking when in full view and this is perfect for this kind of pictures

cheers!
