This took an incredible amount of time to finish. There were countless hours of stippling (lots of tiny dots) involved! It's black micron pen with white colored pencil on Earthbound recycled paper.

I apologize for the comment spam! Don't feel obligated to reply to all of them, haha...I'm fan-girling out a bit.

I think a mark of a fantastic artist is their patience and enthusiasm for a piece. And you clearly have both in order to do such extensive stippling projects. I lose my motivation on one piece too fast...maybe one day I can get to this level!

I always reply, I appreciate every comment I get. ^.^ Except for one that I got on one of my other pieces. The person commented with something like " Ew, boobies."

Thank you for the kind words.  I've discovered quite a few tricks that help me get through a stippling piece. I always have something else going on in the background like a movie or TV show, I do a lot of stippling at work while I'm at my desk talking on the phone. I can kind of zone out and get lost in the little dots.

And I never finish a stippling piece all in one chunk of time. I will do a layer on the background, not look at it for a few days. I will do a couple more layers and finish the background, put it away for a week. I will choose a component in my foreground and finish it or get a few layers done, then put it away for a day. You get the idea. ^.^ Sorry if I'm babbling. I definitely recommend working in layers. Trying to stipple a piece in one single layer seems frustrating to me.
I tend to think of stippling as relaxing, rather than annoying or anything. I had one person explain it as being very "zen", which I thought was fitting.  If I stop feeling relaxed while I'm working on a stippling piece, I put it away.

I have one piece I've been stippling on and off for about 5 months. It's a nine-tailed fox spirit with a big pretty tree and some swirls. I finally have the background completely done and the tree half way done.

This piece (the chipmunk one), I completed over the course of probably a month. The speed in which I finish a piece like this just depends on my mood, I guess. O.o

Oh, okay! That seems like a good way to handle a stippling piece! I had a friend who did stippling but it was so fitting for her cuz she was a bubbly person so the madness suited her in a way!

Taking it in chunks is a great way to handle something so daunting!

Fantastic work, looks incredible! I've tried stippling before in a high school art class-- its quite difficult.

I think the hardest part is how long it takes! It can be kind of relaxing sometimes though.

Wow, it's so detailed! You did an amazing job drawing it. I admire both the concept and realization and also I like very much that you used only shades of one colour, what stressed the beauty of all the patterns.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nicole-Marie-Walker In reply to Gialoc [2012-02-29 11:48:13 +0000 UTC]

Yep! All by hand. ^.^ The only thing digital is the watermark. I do have to admit though, sometimes I get worried that all of the stippling I do is going to give me carpal tunnel in my wrist!

Gialoc In reply to Nicole-Marie-Walker [2012-02-29 11:53:53 +0000 UTC]

No don't get a carpal tunnel in your wrist, it would be too bad :/
Anyway you must be very patient to do such a work with dots, I'm impressed.
Is it for your job ?

Nicole-Marie-Walker In reply to Gialoc [2012-02-29 11:57:25 +0000 UTC]

Nah, my job is actually completely unrelated. I don't even know how I would go about turning this into a career. I do want to get a website and some prints up to sell, once I get the extra cash to do so. And I have an old etsy account that I would like to activate again. That and I need to decide what the barnacle I would call a website if I had one. I really am hopeless with some things. XD

I thought you were an illustrator. Your work would be so nice in a book !
What you're hopping for seems to be realizable ! I am pretty sure you can do it, take your time ! x)
What is a barnacle I don't understand that thing ?

Thanks! I love using earthbound recycled paper. Or any tainted paper really. I've you've never tried it I highly recommend it! Adding the highlights to this one at the very end really brought it to life.

Believe it or not this is a 2nd attempt at this piece. I got a few days into the original which was also stippling with ink. I didn't like the way the original was turning out so I restarted the entire thing. XD Must be I love to torture myself!
