Description "The morality of my actions escapes me."

Dr. Manhattan, Watchmen

This image can seem quite clear in its depiction of the situation and the characters involved, but, at the same time, it does lend itself to a wide variety of interpetations depending on the viewer. Thus, the title: What do you see?
What does Ghost Rider see when he looks down with his penance stare at someone who's committed an (aparent) crime? Does he have second thoughts about the morality of his actions? Or those of his 'victims'? What does the girl see in the cold eyes of vengeance? Pity? Relentlesness? A touch of confusion?
I always try to have depth in my images. Something that makes you think; and I think this one does that and so I'd like to hear you out there and what you think of this situation. What happened? What will be the consequences?

This is another image in the list of concepts my friend *Mnesimache gave me. He also contributed to the title, so, a double-thanks for him!

I hope you like it!

I guess none of you have ever heard of the ghost rider. Here is how the story goes. Some say there is a bit of truth in tall stories. The ghost rider first begins as a mortal man who signs a contract with the devil mephistopheles which then he becomes the devil's bounty hunter and he rides on his hellcycle in the never ending pursuit of the sinful and the damned to send those who would commit murder or any other sinful crime to hell.

GR - You just put a hole in my jacket.
Girl - I'm- I'm sorry?
GR - Hmmm...
Girl - I- I though you were a monster.
GR - Oh?
Girl - I- I mean...  Are you? A monster?
GR - Only to the bad guys.
Girl - Oh...

Wow, the coloring is simply splendid!!! You sure did well on the 'make you think' part as well~

I think, maybe, the girl's had a lot of trama in her life, and just couldn't stand it, so she killed the person that gave her so much pain, and is now starting to regret it. The ghost rider is trying to decide on whether or not to put more pain on her, for what she did, or to let her go, let her think out what she just did, and turn herself in.

That's my thoughts at least. ^^-

And very good thoughts they are, Li! I'm glad that this image got you thinking as it has done all of those who've seen it so far. It's always a great pleasure to know I can do that with my pieces, because art -to me, at least- is fundamentally about communication; about sending a message or a feeling accross...

Thank you!

One of my favorite Marvel characters, when I saw this I fell there's almost a feeling of caring, Penance being the first step to forgiveness. Whether it was intended or not, it's a far cry from most of the rage filled images of Ghost Rider.

Thank you, Bruce! I was actually trying to convey just that feeling you mentioned... that sort of puzzled look Ghost Rider would have, if faced with such a moral conflict as the one I depicted. I've always liked to show a different side to classical characters and I'm happy that I managed to achieve it.

I'm glad to hear you strive for depth in your works, I don't hear alot of artists saying that anymore
But it does make me think, the image itself is well composed and draws you in through expressed emotion. and of course your words are something to ponder

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NicolasRGiacondino In reply to valentinecrow [2008-03-17 00:44:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! Yes, indeed I always try to make the viewer 'feel' something, even if that something isn't particularly akin to what my thoughts on the matter are. But the fact that we can communicate with others through art is one of the things I think we all cherish from our work as illustrators/artists/craftsmen. To get complimented on that is certainly a great reward!

Thanks again!

I never did read any of the Ghostrider comicbooks so I don't quite know the personality of Ghostrider.

But I would guess that the girl have defended herself against, perhaps a punchy punchy boyfriend. Ghostrider sees this and feels somehow proud in the fact that she have chosen to rise above her situation.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NicolasRGiacondino In reply to RABies-RABbit [2008-03-11 23:13:43 +0000 UTC]

That's what would normally happen with a human being, indeed. But Ghost Rider being a demon of vengeance, it does have a certain lack of human knowledge to judge. That's the dichotomy that we don't see in comics nowadays; the gray areas when a 'hero' has to judge what to do and what is justified and how...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, mate!
