Happy Tuesday, folks!I was mentioning the power of simple character designs yesterday and so when I went to warm-up today, I followed up those thoughts on the paper by paying tribute to The King himself, ol' Jack Kirby.
The Silver Surfer is one of those iconic figures that you just can't help but recognise instantly and his design and whole concept are very simple, if you look closely. A guy with a surfboard that's made of silver; bam. There you go. And it's in that archetypal simplicity that you find something becoming so truly unique, it hasn't changed in decades. Not that it needs to, either.
I always loved this character and the profound questions that always seemed to be on his mind. He knew so much of the universe, that he was somewhat disillusioned by it all being pointless as food for greater beings and yet, he found a way to redeem himself from that and become something else, never losing his ability to be compassionate and question the nature of things. Hopefully, I was able to render some of that complex personality in my illustration.

Silver Surfer is a kind of a character that MUST be the stupidest and lasiest design from the very idea at the very start!
But NOPE.
Some magic happens and you get one of the most cool badass looking characters in the whole universe.
He is silver, no doubt.
He uses the board, yep.
He is naked.
And it looks awesome.

Exactly! If you tell anyone the basic concept for this guy, you'd get rolling eyes and yet, when you see him on the page, it looks badass. I guess that's what happens when you have one of the most talented creators of all time working on 'em. No wonder Jack was 'The King'.

While I'm not too fond of the Fantastic Four (hooray for Dr. Doom!), I was absolutely smitten with Doug Jones' performance of the spacefaring silver traveler

I recetly bought a paperback collecting the work that Moebius did for 'The Incal' series and realised that the man was a beast when it came to simplifying and using very straightforward colors and lines to conevy lots with less. So I'm learning how to make something great with less indeed.
