Here's what I see from the family tree of Gaianx:
Getter Robo: Some immortal badass who wanders the earth, fathering many badass mecha animes. Not technically a member but was the one who started it all.
GunBuster: A fair and freindly woman who greets everyone she meets with a bright smile, despite the troubles that plagued her life. Make no mistake, as the matriarch of the family, she is by far the most powerful of the bunch (save for one...) and will not hesitant to show it should anyone harm her family.
Evangelion: The son of Gunbuster and raised to be her successor. All seemed well at first...until his mind broke, leaving him as a being of pure hatred and destruction. Unforunately, he inherited his mother's power and proceeded to destroy everything GunBuster tried to build up. And soon, others followed suit while GunBuster watched on in horror.
FLCL: A feisty madien who was one of the many who tried to defeat Evangelion. However, Evangelion did take her as his wife and recongized her as his equal. GunBuster looked to her as her new successor but alas, she was not right as she went around shooting people at random and bashing skulls in with guitars.
DieBuster: The name that GunBuster used when attempting to over throw Evangelion and FLCL. Although she tried so hard, in her old age she simply could not do itΒ so she had to watch, crying in despair until...
Gurren Lagann: The child of Evangelion and FLCL. Neither wanted to raise the heir so they dumped him on GunBuster. Seeing a second chance in the child. She taught him everything she knew as well as taught him about the mistakes made by herself, his father and his mother. With this knowledge, he crusaded against his father and mother. As he fought onward, he dared himself to match the legacy he inherited. Dared to be as great as his mother. Dared to be as great as her comrades. As strong as his father. As strong as his grandmother. And as strong as even his ancestor Getter Robo himself. And he surpassed them all. However, knowing how much destruction he was capable of, GL held himself back to allow his descendents to surpass him, just as he did.

No big deal, but I do have to mention that while Getter Robo didΒ make combining robots (probably the most popular type of mecha across the board) a thing, not only does no other combiner (minus Gekiganger) actually combine the way it does (forms 1, 2, 3), but Mazinger is still the most referenced Super Robot in all of mecha, along with being the one that made piloting robots a trend.

Gunbuster, who takes after her Great Granpappy Getter Dragon, right down to the badass Armfold...he is SO proud.

the Family shame, Evangelion, who is unusually popular despite being completely unlikable...the others don't like talking to or about her...
The young child known as Fooly Cooly, prefering to be called FLCL, is a rebelious young lad who has an obsession with Rockin' Guitars and looks up to Gunbuster for Badassery advice, but takes it in his own unique way
the most recent Son of the Gainax Family...Gurren Lagann. Reviving the Awesome that Big Sister Gunbuster gave, but instead decided to look up to Uncle Shin Getter 2 and his magnificent Drill. He managed to be as "Gar" as he could....until the ending, which the Creators botched almost as badly as Evangelion's....except without the Budget excuse.

You are far more knowledgeable of Gainax's family tree than I. On note of TTGL's ending, I think maybe they were aiming for something... "conclusive" I guess is the word I'd use. Everything sorted itself out by the end, despite how it wasn't really a fairytail ending.

And that's why they are so good.

some of it I can call homage, but Gurren Lagann was doing well until they further explained Spiral Power. it's Getter Rays. it's not even hiding the fact that it's literally Getter Rays. Nemesis is the same thing as Emperor.
I mean. at least the designs were cool and the action was just as. though I may be biased, prefering Daibuster to TTGL...I'm weird I suppose.
