Even when I am very sad I feel this one trying to bring me out of it.
When I see this I get that momentary pull toward joy.
Every time.

How long did this take?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NewAgeTraveller In reply to PeppermintCandyArt [2016-05-03 15:00:46 +0000 UTC]

Quite a long time, the background of roses about 2 weeks (I'm quite slow!) and another 2 for the portrait, so about a month all in all!

So realistic! I'm pleased to see that this is in acrylics - I feel that sometimes people look down on acrylics, but this has such skill and detail that I can't see why Congrats on the DD!

Thank you for the positive comments! yes I agree that people can look down on acrylics and see them as somehow less prestigious than oils or watercolours. This is a shame because they are very versatile and have some fantastic properties and advantages over these supposedly more renowned mediums. I use them thick and opaque like oils, and watery and transparent like watercolours, all in the same painting. And I've always found the quick drying time very useful. I can do a bit, stop for a coffee, and when I return it's in the knowledge that it will all be dry and ready to work on top of, without any worry of what's underneath bleeding through. What I would say, though, is it's always vital to use the best quality acrylic paint you can lay your hands on. My favourite brands are Old Holland New Masters, Golden, Liquitex and so on.Β You get what you pay for and I'd never use cheap paints byΒ unknown manufacturers!Β

Your comment is very encouraging. Β Several people have told me I 'have' to try oils and I was starting to feel that I couldn't improve if I didn't switch mediums. Β My situation at the moment doesn't really allow me to try them properly so I shall continue with my acrylics with renewed enthusiasm for their positive features

Yes, definitely keep going with acrylics! When I was starting out many years ago I came across David Hockney's "Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy" double portrait and it just blew me away. That was painted in acrylics and it inspired me to use them myself. I have recently started using oils for the first time and they are beautiful to work with but I'll never stop using acrylics!Β
