Description Finally got around to doing some pigeon practice photography today at WWT Arundel.

This was shot with my good old D200 and Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR. I have to say - its the best lens i've ever used!

I was getting frustrated with the D300 with the Nikon 200-400mm f4 VR for this - It seems to miss ALL the damn time!

I don't know weather its because the zoom is too long for close action, or the body Just can't handle it or the AF-s system settings need tweaking slightly etc.

Next time i'm out i'll stick the 70-200mm f2.8 on the D300 and see how that goes.

The focusing systems between the D200 and D300 are so dramatically different!

Ordinarily Iā€™m not drawn to pictures of pigeons but this is no ordinary picture of a pigeon.

Oh dear! The hotel I'm in is offering pan-fried wood pidgeon on the menu!!! Not sure I want to know where they're getting it...

Awesome sharp shot... only thing I can think of to improve it is if the pidgeon was turned slightly more clockwise for a full head shot, but with a wild target that's not something easily managed after all!

yeah I wish it was slightly more to the left or its wing slightly further back

Someone needs to design a little headset to put on said pigeons head to give instructions... shame you'd need another pigeon, or a person fluent in pigeon talk, to get them in the right place!

Lovely shot man! I love taking these shots of pigeons.
The background accentuates the bird, very well done.
We'll have to meet up sometime to compare AF performance.

yeah defo mate I'm pretty sure the issue with my bigger lens is that i'm just trying to get frame filling shots and they suddenly enter beyond the minimum focusing area, and using the full zoom range on 200-400mm for focusing slows it down a tad lol

This has got to be the best shot i've ever seen of a Pidgeon! Everything about it is spot-on...

If you do get round to setting up a workshop, put my name down (price depending of course )!

I think the background really brings out the bird in this shot. almost like a burst with the landing.. i have also been working on birds a bit the last months so you adding these has been a major insperation for me.. I think so far this is my fav of the recent.

It's a long way to go for pigeon photography .

Good capture but shadows are harsh and background is a bit messy.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Neutron2K In reply to JakeSpain [2008-11-12 18:44:21 +0000 UTC]

not a lot you can do about shadows or background when shooting these things landing mate

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

JakeSpain In reply to Neutron2K [2008-11-12 18:50:30 +0000 UTC]

I realise that, maybe I should say it'd be better under better conditions.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Neutron2K In reply to JakeSpain [2008-11-12 18:55:09 +0000 UTC]

conditions were perfect mate. first thing in the morning. Shadows just there cos of its wing getting in the way and the background - well I think its pretty clean. No distraction as everythings nicely blurred. Would be nice to have solid green but its very rare you'll get that with action shots
