That's probably how Mario would be done nowadays. Cuz everything must be dark n' gritty by default
Regardless, the art is excellent here, Mario has some Mark Haggarth feauters about him, and it totally works, plus those Goombas look very creepy, the overal vibe is certainy unsettling yet epic, given the overal composition which is very dynamic. I certainly won't say anything original here, so to put it short: fantastic job
