Sorry I couldn't get to your comment sooner! I've seen people do well with both digital and traditional art, but I think a lot of people go with digital because coloring is easier. People tend to like colored art more than just plain black and white, and coloring each piece traditionally can be hard.

You could also do a mix of digital and traditional if you wanted, if you're more comfortable drawing traditionally and coloring digitally. Whatever you are most comfortable with! The important thing is to not burn yourself out trying to do things you're not comfortable with!

Thanks! I definitely want to try out digital coloring more and see how it goes. This helps - I really like to draw traditionally, but digital coloring is soo addictive! lol

XD I love this tutorial! XD I want to try to get into my first artist alley at a con I plan on going into in October. But I'm really nervous about what I should try to have in terms of art and such. Like, for example, I heard from an artist who I saw in an artist alley that there is a set rule of how much fanart can be sold per picture. Is that true for most cons? Also how many pieces should I try to have to sell if I want do artist alley? Also where should I try to get my prints made from? I don't know where I can make prints of my art to sell.... -.-6

I'm sorry for putting so many questions on you.. >.<

I am so glad that you like it!
It is so great that you are going to start selling at Artist Alley! I have personally never been to a con that puts limits on fan art, and I have been to quite a few in three different states, but every Alley is different. Some will tell you no pictures copied from books, or no fan art at all. It all depends on the con and the person in charge.

If you are planning to sell prints, I would recommend having at least 15 different pictures. Try to vary your pictures to show off all your talents, so people know what you can do. Drawing at the table in front of customers is very popular, so you should try to do that as much as possible.

As for printing, most cities have a local print shop. If you have friends who work at a school or office building, sometimes they can print things for you. There are also businesses online that will print your art and mail it to you. This might be expensive, but it works. Just try searching for printing shops near you or online.

Hope that helps.

how many pieces of art do you make to sell at a con? Just curious

neooki23 In reply to zeros-nettop [2010-07-06 20:57:38 +0000 UTC]

I'm still making art... I think we have about 94 different products and original pieces. There's really no limit. I would say at least 15 different pieces is a good minimum.

I feel the same way, every time we plan to go to another convention. I stress all the way until the event but then it is always worth it in the end.

So i have a question.. how do you do research into the cons like that? I mean.. sure you can look at a con's page, but how do you gauge what is popular in a specific area of the country?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

neooki23 In reply to subomouse [2010-01-31 05:33:54 +0000 UTC]

Usually message boards on the con website will have comments on costumes and shows being played. If it is popular enough to be dressed as or given special attention by those running the convention, it will probably be popular with those attending it.

I did it twice. Once at SabotenCon'09, and again for AniZona'4 2009. Small conventions, but still. Same experience.

how do you know if your good enough (not to sound really whiny or anything) I know im a young artist and all but i've had friends here on DA go and try it out they had fun and made some money. I just dont want to take the risk and end up..well disappointed.

I wouldn only THINK about doing this if i had a buddy, i'd be scared out of my mind standing around with know one to talk to and no one buying my stuffs.

But thanks for the tutorial its really helpful!

neooki23 In reply to DroseAttack [2010-01-13 02:50:01 +0000 UTC]

There is no way for anyone to tell if they are good enough to sell their art. I have had plenty of people criticize my art at conventions before. The key is to love your own art. If you love what you do and you feel like you can do it, do it! Don't let what other people think hold you back.
It's a lot of work to be really successful at an Artist Alley, but you have a beautiful style. If you wanted to take the time to do it, I know you could.
