Description Watercolor, 2016. Livadia, Tilos, Greece.
I had the pleasure to visit the small island of Tilos for three weeks during September. My intention was to paint a lot and to go on hikes all around the island. I arrived to Livadia, the only real port and the biggest village on the island, well after sunset. Livadia! Already from the name it felt like taken right out of a fairytale! We had been traveling with a small ferry from Rhodes for three hours in rather hight sea and got to witness an unforgettable sunset over the mediterranean. It felt like we would never arrive, but then suddenly we saw the beautiful, wild and rocky silhouette of the island emerging through the evening mist and the sun was setting right behind the island. For me it was a truly magical moment! It became dark before we had arrived. The next morning I woke up to only the sound of the sea, rooster crows and the pleasant sound of an old fishing boat going out to sea. When I went out on the terrace I was welcomed with the view in this painting. As you understand, I immediately felt really welcome! Tilos embraced me with open arms and this became my first painting of the island, sitting on my terrace shivering from the excitement of finally being here. This was the first out of twenty marvelous sunrises that I got to experience on Tilos!
Hope you like it!

Good to see you had fun on your trip!

I can tell from the painting the views must've been unforgettable. I particularly like the amount of detail you put into the piece, the waves and boats look especially nice. Also, I really like how the colors blend so nicely, like light from a real sunset.

Excellent piece! Glad to see you back on DA!

Hello my friend! Thanks a lot! Yes it feels nice to be back and to hear from you! The views were really breathtaking and during the first days I just felt that I wanted to paint every single moment of it!  I'm really happy you like this painting. I really struggled with this one. First I felt that it was way to pale and then I added some purple shades and suddenly it felt more alive! One thing that I'm pleased with is the rather intense red "gloria" of reflecting light that I made on the land just below the sun. It's easier to see in the original, but I felt that this red shade made the sunrise feel warmer and more realistic. Well, anyway, thanks a lot for your kind words!! I will be posting many more paintings from Tilos during the next week, if you like to see! Have a great Sunday and week!

Hi Magnus, this is such a pretty painting.  Beautiful color pallet that is very eye catching and has great color harmony and unity.  Detail in the boats are wonderful.

Would please like to request that you submit this to the group's Show Case Gallery for our next best in show competition. If you decide to submit please let me know which level you would like it placed. Intermediate or advanced.

Hi Kirti! Thank you SOOO MUCH!! It was really a tranquil sunset to experience and I'm really pleased that that the painting gives you that feeling.  Actually, one thing I learned from this painting was the importance purple shades in nature when the sun rises. I hadn't realized how important that color is before but I think this was the key to this painting. Thanks and I will send you a note soon! Have a great weekend!

Aww it's beautiful.
The colors are fantastic, the contrasts created really amaze me and the picture still keeps its smoothness and pleasure of the smooth lighting. Your visit must have been an amazing experience from what you say and show to us.
I think that what could have been done better is the texturing of the sea and mountain/land, the first should be smoother (you can achieve this by using a handkerchief or your fingers to blend in and give it a lean look, and the latter should be rougher with more different shades inside to create a better shape. Moreover, the waves feel disturbing compared to the silent sea. A little bit of white and some more shades of blue around them could make up for it.
The sky is very pretty and the reflection on the water is well drawn. The small ships complete the picture.
Pretty good job there! I think you've successfully delivered the feelings to me.

Hi Lyna! Thanks a lot for your detailed and constructive feedback! It's great to get input and suggestions about how to improve.  The texture of the mountain could probably have been a bit smother but I also think that the picture I took of the painting made the texture a bit sharper than it actually is in the original painting. As for the land in front of the mountains I didn't want to make it to detailed since I wanted to create a feeling of bright backlight, but at the same time I understand what you mean. I could probably have made this part a bit rougher, without spoiling the effect.  I'm really happy that you like the painting as a whole and I'm so grateful for your comment!  Take care and stay creative!

Hi, you're so very welcome.
Ah, I see what you're trying to portray there, you have a good knowledge of composition.
Ye good thing about giving good feedback is that you can improve by reflecting on what other artists could have done better.

Hi, yes I agree! Good feedback goes both ways. Both the artist and the viewer get to reflect. We can all learn from each other and that's a really good thing about DA.
