Yes, in the brightest corner, right outside (LOL) our window (at least a window-wannabe, the only thing I can see when I look up is a small part of the sky. Through BARS.) so the light is pretty crappy down here. And I do so much hate to use flash on a cat.

Me, too! Especially flash on a black cat. I try to capture photos of Rocko & Spunky during the day, when sunlight comes through the windows and hits their fur.

No kiddin'... I live with my cat in a dark basement (we rent a room here, pretty cosy ^^). As you can see, nenneko is all black. And there's no sunlight there, EVER. Well... I guess that makes it enogh complicated. I'm very happy when I manage to take a nice shot of him here. Thanks!
