I went on a walk through a highmoor and suddenly I saw this beautiful butterfly. It is a Emperor Moth (Saturnia pavonia) and it belongs to the family Saturniidae. Although it is a moth, which normally are nocturnal the males of this species are diurnal and searching for females. The females are "sleeping" in the daytime and attract males with pheromones originating from a gland. On this pic you can see the gland (it's a female). It is the small yellow, semilunar thing on the end of the abdomen.Related content

I own only general insect books. For ID requests I always ask in forums like diptera.info, lepiforum ([link] ) or entomologie.de.
I just don't know were to begin with literature on insects.

Very beautiful shot. You've just reminded me I was going to treat myself to a good Moth ID book this pay day. I'm off to Amazon to decide which one. Can't wait for moths to return again this year, too few about at this time of year.

The pattern and shape of the wings reminds me of a baby bunny.
