More realism-no lineart work. Neko's battleform this time.I'm making progress, I can feel it!
Even though those sabers look like toothpicks, and the light source is all over the place 
Referenced from a multitude of lion, leopard, jaguar, and cheetah photographs. I didn't use any brushes that Adobe Photoshop CS2 didn't come with.

Complicated. I start with a sketch, then I color the base shape on a new layer, brush in some texture with a fuzzy-looking tipped brush with 'other settings' on 'fade' to about 130, brush mode swapping between 'multiply' and 'screen' on a 50-60 opacity. Top it off by setting the blur brush to the same fuzzy one used on the fur. Something like that. I should make a tutorial, no?

Well, I get one of the default fuzzy looking brushes that come with adobe photoshop CS2, I tweak the other brush settings to fade, and the fade depends on how long the fur should look. For example, the mane and ears have a fade of about 250+ while the rest of the fur has about 130-160 fade. Most times I set the brush to 'multiply' and lower the brush opacity between 50-70, or more if I need it. I go over the entire [sometimes locked so as not to go past the shape] layer with the brush, going darker where there should be shades. Then I switch the brush mode to 'screen' and add in highlights and counteract the multiply strokes. Then I get the blur tool, equip it with a fuzzy looking brush tip, lower the strength to where I feel I need it, and do my best to blur some good fur
