It's no secret that tigers are on the brink of extinction in the wild. A hundred years ago or so, approximately 100,000 tigers were roaming through Asia. Today, this number has declined to an estimated 2,000-3,000. This is sad beyond belief, the following story in yesterday's Guardian notwithstanding:

www.theguardian.com/environmen… According to this article, the numbers of wild tigers has increased from ~1,700 in 2011 to 2,200 in 2014 in India. If this is true AND can be maintained or further improved, it may be time to become a little more optimistic, although I have read similar stories before...

I deliberately darkened this shot by setting the exposure to –1 stop to fit the theme.

This is, by the way, a female Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) residing in the zoo of Leipzig, Germany
