Description Assalaamu alaikum [Peace be to you],

I wasn't planning to submit anything for valentine's day. as a Muslim who does not celebrate it, I was going to just ignore it. until I got this sweet note from a Christian sister wishing me a happy valentine's day. then I really got to reply. But before that, I need to explain certain things.

REMARK: this article is not aimed to insult people's customs or practices. it is aimed to present the Islamic perspective on these customs for the purpose of better understanding of Islam.

first part:

ISLAMIC STANCE TOWARDS THIS FESTIVAL: (continuation)

The Muslim's attitude towards this holiday should be clear:
1- He should not celebrate it, or join others in their celebrations of it, or attend their celebrations because it is forbidden to celebrate the festivals of non-Muslims.
2- He should not help the non-Muslims in their celebrations because it is one of the rituals of what Islam considers as disbelief. Helping them and approving of what they do is helping them to manifest disbelief and make it prevail.
3- He should not help any Muslims who celebrate it. Rather, it is obligatory for a Muslim to denounce them, because for the Muslims to celebrate the festivals of non-Muslims is considered a wrong action which must be condemned.
4- He should not accept congratulations on Valentine's Day, because it is not a holiday for the Muslims. If the Muslim is congratulated on this occasion, he should not return the congratulation. if asked why, he should politely explain.

WHAT ABOUT LOVE?

Some people may wonder, and say: "You mean to deprive us of love! but in this day and age we express our feelings and emotions - what is so wrong with that?"

The love referred to on this day is romantic love, taking mistresses and lovers, boyfriends and girlfriends... This is a day on which a lot of fornication happens, with no restraints or restrictions, and even children are encouraged to start engaging in premarital relationships.… We're not talking of pure love between a man and his wife or a woman and her husband. they do not distinguish between the legitimate love in the relationship between husband and wife, and the sinful love of mistresses and lovers. This festival for them is a means for everyone to express love. be it right love or wrong love.

What many of these people think is that love before marriage is a good thing. This sinful practice is condemned by the Almighty. Islam forbids anything that can possibly lead to fornication. So, how can we believe that valentine's day is of any benefit to Muslims? The truth is that it is a call for corruption, more permissiveness and immorality, and the forming of forbidden relationships. The husband who sincerely loves his wife does not need this holiday to remind him of his love. He expresses his love for his wife at all times and on all occasions.

Besides, expression of feelings and emotions is not a justification to allocate a day for celebration and to call it a festival. In Islam, a husband loves his wife throughout the year, and he expresses that love towards her with gifts, in verse and in prose, in letters and in other ways, throughout the years - not just on one day of the year.

Islam is a religion of Love. It encourages its followers to love and care for one another. But it applies at all times and in all circumstances, not just on one particular day. Indeed, Islam encourages us to express our emotions and love at all times, as the last Prophet of Islam -Peace be upon him- once said: "If a man loves his brother, let him tell him that he loves him."
And he -Peace be upon him- said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul [he means 'By God'], you will not enter Paradise until you truly believe, and you will not truly believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of something that, if you do it, you will love one another? Spread Salaam* amongst yourselves."

*Salaam means peace. it is also the peace greeting of the Muslims.

LOVE IN ISLAM:

Love in Islam is more general and more comprehensive; it is not restricted only to one kind of love, that between a man and a woman. there are forms of expressing love that are Islamically acceptable, while there are others that are not religiously acceptable. Among the forms of love that are religiously acceptable are those that include the love for the God almighty. the love for the Prophets and Messengers of the God -peace be upon them-. the love for the righteous and good people. the love for the parents. the love for the friends and family. the love for the Muslim brothers and sisters. and of course the love between the husband and his wife...

Islam does recognize happy occasions that bring people closer to one another, and add spice to their lives. However, Islam goes against blindly imitating the non-believers regarding a special occasion such as Valentine’s Day. Hence, commemorating that special day known as the Valentine’s Day is an innovation that has no religious backing. Every innovation of that kind is rejected, as far as Islam is concerned. Islam requires all Muslims to love one another all over the whole year, and reducing the whole year to a single day is totally rejected.
Hence, we Muslims ought not to follow in the footsteps of such innovations and superstitions that are common in what is known as the Valentine’s Day. No doubt that there are many irreligious practices that occur on that day, and those practices are capable of dissuading people from the true meanings of love and altruism to the extent that the celebration is reduced to a moral decline.

So I, as a Muslim, my reply to "happy valentine" greeting and wishes is:
I appreciate your feelings but Sorry, I am a Muslim. and I do not celebrate this kind of festivities.
That being said, we Muslims do not deny other people's right to celebrate, be happy and enjoy their festivals. we do not force our religious opinion about Valentine's day on those who like to celebrate it. we always echo the Qur'anic verse "To you be your way and to us be ours".

I hope this was beneficial.

You could say the same for the majority of Christians, Atheists and many other religions and social groups.
Look at the faults in your own beliefs and culture before you go and spout trash about others. Take a moment to learn and reflect.
Millions of Muslims live their lives and worship in peace and have done so for centuries, despite how they're depicted in the media thanks to ignorance and fear mongering extremists. It's people with attituids like yours that keep people from accepting, educating themselevs and moving forward for the better.

Oh?lMaybe that's beca we have our festival when it's supposed to be and not make them up when it suits us. We hate fun, do we? I see billions of Muslims having fun on Eid and going on holiday. And our restrictions are for our own goods. For example alcohol because it's bad for you. Not all of us believe that for the slightest crime you should be executed and the Quran was written in like the 15th Century and Islam encourages spending time with your kids rather than go on pointless dates. And you ARE allowed to wear most things as long as it covers your hair(choice), doesn't show off your breast, isn't too tight. Hijab is a choice not a "boring" law and if it's not prejudice, then why does France ban hijab?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rinim10 In reply to Wanilla13 [2014-10-28 20:32:32 +0000 UTC]

"Hijab is a choice" most of the time it's not. If a muslim woman doesn't wear it she'll be shamed/cast out/beaten by her family and other muslims look down on her.

Also you cut of foreskins which is pointless mutilation

Also you ban pork which is also pointless.

Stupid religion, insane followers.

Clearly you're uneducated and fishing for attention, but I'd like to point out that there're many different religions that practice circumcision and turn away certain foods. Heck... There are people who aren't religious at all who have their children circumcised, so you're hardly making a valid point. Instead you just make yourself look prejudice and foolish.

Whoa, now, wait. Valentine's Day, today, is pretty much a greeting card holiday, but originally it was to honor a man who, despite being persecuted for his belief in God, married several couples in the name of God. Why on Earth would that be against Islam? Saint Valentinus was doing all this hundreds of years before Muhammad was born, so it's not like he was going around denying Muhammad was a prophet.

If Jesus, Abraham, Adam, etc. are all Muslims, even though they praised God hundreds of years before Muhammad's birth, because they submitted to God and his teachings, then why is St. Valentine not also a Muslim?

Forgive me if I am wrong about this, I am not a Muslim or Christian myself, but a Buddhist (although I am dating a Muslim). But I think my information here is right. What say you?

I'm sick of people coming to my page and claiming to be Muslims and propagating anti-Islamic behaviors. you have empty profile and this is the only comment you made here in deviantART. no contributions, no journals and nothing in your page tells me you are a Muslim. I'm afraid I don't believe you simply because I had some people like you creating new accounts only to troll by coming here to attack Islam while claiming to be Muslims.
why don't you use you real account instead of using an empty one to comment? if you are a Muslim like you claim, then let it be shown in your own page. if you believe that celebrating Valentine is Islamic, then let us see you write it in your page and provide the sources of your claims. I'm afraid my page is NOT the place for you.

Uhh...
Holidays have, at least in america, lost their connection to religion.

Saint valentines day became valentines day, instead of celebrating god, it has became a day of celebrating love and happiness and bonds between two people.

Christmas transformed from celebrating "Christs"{I'm an antitheist, i don't want religion to spread while censoring the opposing ideas} (Who was not born in December, but like April or something) but became a day to celebrate being together with your family.

Is religious stuff the only thing you do?
I don't get the women hair thing.
Why don't they gotta cover their eyebrows and eyelashes? Those are hair.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nayzak In reply to Hbomba [2014-02-07 06:15:57 +0000 UTC]

"Is religious stuff the only thing you do?'
Islam is a whole way of life. it covers politics, economy, society, environment, art,... so what I'm doing is not talking about religion, it's talking about my way of life.

"I don't get the women hair thing."
because you didn't read about it.
I have many articles in my gallery covering this topic. if you are interested, have a look at them.

"Why don't they gotta cover their eyebrows and eyelashes? Those are hair."
because they are not commanded to cover them. women are not commanded to cover any hair in their body. they are only commanded to cover all the body except face and hands. therefore, even if the woman is bald, she would have to cover her head. while if she has face hair, she doesn't have to cover them (although I think it should be better to do so.)

Oh, I see, it's not the LOVE you're against, but the fact that it is not Muslim in origin and therefore not part of your religious celebrations. That's fair.

About your comment of loving-your-spouse-year-round, it's not that they don't love each other, but (this is coming from my personal observations of the world around me) some people are so busy that they either don't have time for their loved ones or they're dead on their feet when they do have time. For them, the holiday is an excuse to put aside work (without feeling guilty, similar to how if you have a family emergency the teachers are more willing to forgive you for not finishing your homework than if you didn't do it simply because you wanted to play video games instead) and spend some much needed time with their loved ones. Thank goodness my family isn't among those people (in fact, sometimes I suspect we spend too much time together; Nobody knocks before entering the bathroom anymore....  ).

Yeah, I know, that fact is sad, but that's life unfortunately.

Just saw your response to someone apparently saying drawing Anime is extremely forbidden . As far as I know , forming images and pictures - aside from camera pictures - is forbidden . Still , there are exceptions . Some are drawing for necessities and benefit such as teaching . And it would be better to discard some details such as the nose or the outlines of the neck .
Is that correct ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nayzak In reply to Yami-D-Sparx [2014-01-17 20:48:40 +0000 UTC]

well, I prefer to avoid pointless discussions. drawing is a controversial subject and it leads to pointless discussions. I already provided links to 2 websites that deal with it in my journal "for the millionth time." you may have a look at it if you are interested.

as for "discarding certain details", as I understand it: as long as the drawing looks clearly to be a drawing, then it is fine.
for example, these following drawings are clearly an imitation of Allah's creation by attempting to look realistic.
kyle-lambert.deviantart.com/ar…
haylsrenn.deviantart.com/art/R…
tsabo6.deviantart.com/art/Girl…
while these following ones are clearly cartoony. they are not done in an aim to imitate God's creation.
cheeks-74.deviantart.com/art/G…
dav-19.deviantart.com/art/Litt…

and Allah knows best.

you come to say that anime is haram and when I find anime in your favorites, you claim this is your son's account. I don't buy your justification.

your presence in an anime website with anime avatar and anime pictures in your favorites is enough to tell me that you are not practicing what you preach. I don't take advices from those who don't practice what they preach. therefore I'm not allowing you to comment in my page.
