Description I’ve been told that if given a chance to relive their high school years, most adults would promptly turn it down—and yet I can’t  see myself wanting to give up my senior year. I’m eighteen, just old enough to get my own tattoo but young enough to cry my eyes out when my parents ground me for it.
These past four years have reoccurred for me over and over again as I mentor others, and even though I feel the pain of everyone that I’ve taught and spoke with, I feel their joy, too. As a teacher aide and co-leader of a popular club, I hear a lot of stories from all sorts of backgrounds. It wasn’t intended for me to become the wise shaman of everyone, the one that everyone runs to with their issues and joys, but it’s been an amazing job for me. I’ve learned so much in so little time, and I feel that before I graduate, I want to leave a list of things that I’ve learned. I hope that they can help others out when I’m not there.

1. Love is possible for everyone. I fell in love with the most popular, beautiful boy around and after being his honest, true friend for at least a year and watching him go in and out of relationships, I was completely heartbroken, but I stayed with him. You can’t give up on what you want! I remained his friend and stuck with him for the thick and thin, and one day he  just said his eyes opened and he realized that he loved me, too. Remember that you catch more butterflies with honey than vinegar—stay sweet to those you care about and you’ll never know what can come of it.

2. Take the chance when you can have it! It’s always better to look back at having too many stories (even if they’re horribly embarrassing) than to regret not having enough when it’s all said and done. Don’t take the safe route when the precarious one leads to what you really want. So many of the best choices I made were the ones I knew were hardest to do!

3. Follow your heart. If you can’t be happy with yourself, you can’t be happy with anyone else around you. Love until you can’t anymore and live so you can die laughing. Let yourself be happy, and make the choices that will get you there.

4. Don’t begrudge anyone in need. There’s an amazing karmic payoff in the smallest things, and you never know what it could be. Whenever possible, share your prosperity, knowledge, and help with those that need it. It just feels nice to give, anyway!

5. It’s never over. Never. No matter how much trouble you’re in, it will pass. You will smile again. Hardships exist to make brighter the blessings you receive.

6. Love your family and respect your parents. The fact that you lived past infanthood is proof they care. Your parents give up so much emotionally, physically, spiritually, and monetarily for you. They do love you, even if you frustrate them to no end sometimes. Always remember that, and treat them as the loving people they are. Don’t miss a chance to tell anyone in your family you love them and give them a hug. You're only a generation away from fighting out life on your own, so enjoy every moment you can have with the people that would give their life in a moment for you.

7. Every moment has a rainbow. Even when I was once having a panic attack in a bathroom at a mall, a stranger stopped and talked with me and told me that every moment has joy if we open our eyes to see it. Every moment happens only once, and there’s  no good reason to let ourselves suffer if we can help it. Catch yourself a smile. They’re everywhere.

8. Worrying is a waste of your time. Do what you need to do and just have faith that things will be okay! Have fun, do work, and deal with issues only as needed. Besides, who needs wrinkles popping up on their forehead in their twenties?

9. You are you, and no one else is. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says, you are the only opinion that counts in what you do and what you want. If friends try to tell you otherwise or try to shape you into something you’re not, they’re not your real friends. Embrace who you truly are—people will love you for it, and you will love yourself for it.

10. “Don’t dream it, be it”—a favorite quote of mine from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. If you want something, quit thinking about it and just go for it! If you believe, you can achieve (cheesy as it is, it’s totally true.) and so if you want to be  singer, an actor, a teacher, an astronaut, don’t let anyone say you can’t. It’s not impossible. You can do it! You can do anything!

Your experiences are yours- so go live them, regret nothing, and smile for tomorrow!

Best Wishes and Love Always,
Kittie Peters

I realize this is an extremely old deviation by now, but I had to say that, if you're reading this...it really has made me see the light. Thanks so much for posting it on dA, or I never would have found this sort of inspiration to keep on happy, instead of being sad like I thought I would be.

My opinions:

"Love is possible for everyone." Oh no it ain't. Some don't want it, some aren't giving, and some aren't recieving.

"Take the chance when you can have it" How the fuck is someone supposed to go about doing that, exactly?

"Follow your heart." You CAN be loved and love others without loving yourself. Plenty of people (myself for one) do. And the advice is worthless preppy crap, because if you don't suffer, you don't grow.

"Don’t begrudge anyone in need." There are 6 BILLION people on the planet. How are you supposed to help ALL of them? There IS a thing as too much giving. It's called being co-dependent.

"It’s never over." Not for everyone. There is no guarantee of happiness, no fairness, no warranty. You can't take life back and get a refund.

"Love your family and respect your parents." Great- if they are good parents. DON'T respect bad ones. Parents EARN respect, just like everyone else. Why should they be an exception?

"Every moment has a rainbow." No, it doesn't, and thank fuck for that. If every moment was happy, then I would be puking constantly.

"Worrying is a waste of your time." Over-worrying is, but USEFUL worrying damn well ain't. If you worry about studying enough for a test and then work harder and get a better score, then it's not a waste of time.

"You are you, and no one else is." True, but it's entirely untrue that everyone will love you for it. 80% of the world will hate your guts for it. Why do you think that so many people are fake?

10. “Don’t dream it, be it”Can you fly? Grab a bullet out of thin air? Spontaneously grow fingers out of your ears? No. Not EVERYTHING is possible.

Well, I don't know how old you are, but you still apparently have a lot of growing up to do. I've experienced a LOT, and I promise I know what I'm talking about. When I talk about love and caring for others, I know it doesn't happen every time instantly for everyone... but you CAN make a difference with any little bit of kindness.

I went to jail for theft in the past year and was facing horrible charges, but you know, I went on a probation program and learned that in fact, there IS a way to undo things in life. There ARE second chances. And in that instance, I found that good things come out of horrible things... maybe my cutesy language turned you off, but really, you CAN get something good from just about anything if you try. I believe that focusing on negative aspects of life when you COULD look at the positives is a waste of time. It sounds cheesy, but seriously, I've learned it to be true.

I've been through a lot. I went to church for a few years and quit to become a witch, (never been happier), I've been a cutter and learned to heal, and I've been through arrests and jail and come out a better person.

If anyone shoots you down for trying to be who you are, they aren't even worth considering. Actually doing what you want and being who you want, gaining inner peace-- that's something that comes with time too.

Snarky & obvious comments aside, I still think if you want to do something, you can. Humans wanted to fly, so they made planes. They wanted to stop bullets, so there's kevlar vests. The last one... well no one even needs that, haha. But consider rereading this sometime with a completely unbiased mind and trying it all out. You might be surprised.

Or was this just a bunch of emo "I'm angry at everything" syndrome bitchings...? >>;
I was just curious, 'cause, I couldn't really find any...
But maybe I missed it 'em somewhere?

that was truly amazing. ur a great mentor i see. lol
i wish i was as wise as you when i was back in highschool. XD
one comment about number 9.
well, your opinions are the only ones that matter at the end of your life when you are done and over with this world.
i think opinions from others can truly help you grow and become something more in this community.
sure, stupid useless opinions that are meant to hurt are all trash.
but i don't think you can plainly say "If friends try to tell you otherwise or try to shape you into something you’re not, they’re not your real friends."
what if your addicted to alcohol or smoking, and ur friends tell you to change because they ARE your true friends.
or ur parents for instance. they try to shape you into someone out of love for you.
i think those kind of opinions are very important to take to heart.

nayruasukei In reply to osy057 [2008-02-27 21:17:39 +0000 UTC]

I thought about that-- but that's why I said opinions instead of advice ;3 I really did think about it when ever I said to do what you want to do and all... because the last thing I want is kids thinking "LOL CARPE DIEM DO DRUGS GET FREAKY NAUGHTY!" when I just meant that it's safe to tell your crush you like them or something haha xD

And you're barely out of high school yourself, fool! When all considered, we're about the same age... but I do look up to you. ;__;

Many people think their college years are like the 'dark days' of their lives, though I must say I totally disagree.
There's so much stuff we can do now that we will never be able to again, so we have to use as little time as we have as much as possible.
