If you don't mind my asking, how do you get the eyes in your portraits to look so realistic?

I think a lot of people over-render eyes, which has the opposite effect and makes them look a bit fake. I work with the philosophy of IMPLYING details, instead of tightly rendering detail. In terms of eyes: if you look at your own eyes carefully, you will see that the edge of the iris is not sharp... it's slightly soft. The white of the eye is not actually pure white (and of course the eyeball itself is a sphere, so you need shading and dimension). The pupil of the eye, even though it is black, does not need to be painted pure black and in my opinion often looks better when painted somewhat softly, rather than as a hard circle. And highlights look more realistic if they are subtle and slightly broken up instead of a hard point of light. Realistic eyes are also dependent on how you render the eyelids and eye socket... it needs to "sit" right in the face. that's something that comes with practice and lots of anatony study.
