There are no chimneys, and no electrical wires. How are they heated? Do they have electricity as well?

Where was this taken? I know my family still owns and lives in the oldest continuously inhabited homestead/farm in Voss, though I've never visited.

This is taken in the middle-west of Norway, in MΓΈre and Romsdal near Surnadal. It is still many places like this existing in Norway!

Indeed, everywhere, even in the most mundane places (not that this farm is mundane in any way).

although i wonder whether it doesn't damage the roof? i mean the grass is clearly alive - don't the roots damage the structure of the building?

Almost all old norse houses had grass roof It's still quite usual. Underneath it they used many layers of birch bark, the grass isolates in the winter and makes it cooler in the summer.

I'll also have grass roof on my house. It shouldn't be any problems... Grass roots are not so strong, but you should be aware of trees getting to grow up there.

I wonder if you can grow vegetables [I know the climate is harsh but still] - imagine: carrots, parsley....

Well, this farm is high up in the mountains. You could probably grow herbs and potatoes, nothing more. But other places in Norway one can grow lots of things!

Potatoes look pretty nice when they grow (not to mention herbs). But I'm afraid the roots might go too deep.
I, in turn, recently started having problems with spiders due to the ivy that's grown on the wall of my house. The amounts of them are overwhelming - there's no way to get rid of them.

i've always loved the idea of thermoisolating the rooftop with grass
