info from DSC: Actor Darren McGavin originated the role of Carl Kolchak, a hard-nosed, quick-witted Chicago newspaper reporter for the INS who investigated strange crimes that often involved supernatural or science fiction elements, for the mid-70s ABC television series KOLCHAK: The Night Stalker that spun out of two successful tv movies “The Night Stalker” and “The Night Strangler”. The character was created by Jeff Rice in the novel The Kolchak Papers and adapted by Richard Matheson for television.
