Description Let your daughter be a pirate
if she asks for a wooden sword
help her build her ship from empty boxes
and sail the vast backyard
because a box doesn’t only
have to store dead dreams
and she is so much more
than just a vessel.
Let your daughter be Robin Hood,
if she wants to be an anarchist,
a hero, a rebel, a rogue,
give her bows, and arrows,
and arrogance,
let her fight for the plight of poorer folk
because Robin isn’t just a boy’s name.
Let your daughter be a princess
locked in a tower so high
let her be her own prince,
don’t tell her to wait for a hundred years,
let her swing from her own hair
and grasp her own freedom.
Let your daughter be whatever she wants
especially when she’s young
and you’ll be enamoured by
the woman she becomes.

Women already have both of these things, some just don't realise it

absolutely amazing! lately, I've been down on being a female and all that comes with that and how men sometimes treat us, but this really inspired me thankyou

I'm so sorry to hear that's been getting you down, but happy to hear this piece made you feel more positive again. I understand how you feel, if I spend too long reading up on feminist issues I start to get really sad and angry. I wrote this piece when I saw a mother buying her little girl a wooden toy bow and arrow, and it was such a lovely little image of what gender equality can be, and it made me smile a lot, so this piece happened. Even though there are still so many problems and issues, sometimes you just can't dwell on all the negative stuff, and you have to be grateful and celebrate all the awesome women out there getting to do what they want to do with no shits given, and that they are encouraging their little girls to do the same, and ever so slowly the world is going to start changing

You're right, that piece does fit with mine really well. I've been thinking about doing a similar kind of illustration to go with this piece now it's received so much positive interest. Thanks for showing me this one.

Zenoxen [2014-01-31 23:40:55 +0000 UTC]

A friend of mine asked me to writte this to comment your lovely poem:

"I wish my parents would've followed that advice to the very end. Sadly, after my 11 years of age, they decided that I had no age to dream and now, them empty boxes store only dead dreams. Now, I'm forced to become what they wish and not what I wish and I have no escape from them.

Thank you for writting such a lovely poem. If I ever have a daughter, I'll follow that advice. If I have a son, I'll do it anyways. I'll keep those words in my heart."

My heart honestly breaks for your friend if that is the situation she's in. Obviously I don't know her life or family, or the context she is in, but I will urge her not to give up on those dreams, you can never be a slave to your parents forever, it is your life and you have every right to do with it as you wish. I hope honestly that her situation improves, that she finds a way to make her parents understand, and if not that she can find a way out of their shadows to live happily and freely.
