Description I finished inking the last page of FG #1 a few days ago and was messing around and found this REALLY COOL option under Image Adjustments. I found a way to make lineart, be it digital or real media, cleaner and easier to lay flat colors in. If you're a comic artist this might help you greatly I hope .

Enjoy~

Oh my--

Seriously, this sounds too good to be true. Flatting is, well, I swear a kitten dies every time I have to, but I still flat for an hour thirty everyday, anyway.

Yup, that's the way to do it. If you're working with original cans, you can skip the Threshold step by just scanning in as 1-bit Line Art at 600dpi or more.

Hey, thankyou for the tutorial, it was very informative.

However, if you don't mind. I have a few dumb questions I need to ask..so if you find the time to answer them, I would really appreciate it.

1 - How do you know what resolution (?) is 600 dpi? The reason it's confusing to me, is if you scan, you can scan at that resolution but then the computer does the work for you..so if you're starting from scratch, how do you know what size--resolution is what? (As you can tell, I don't know what I'm talking about here. )

2 - I was thinking of doing a manga..and I wanted to make them so I could put them on the web, but also having the option of printing later. I think you answered someone that at 600 dpi..it would have to be shrunk down to 100 dpi in order to be able to do that. (Which obviously, until I under stand the dpi system, I don't know what the difference would be.) Or is it possible I misunderstood somehow?

3 - I've noticed you've also mentioned Tokyopop..and how they require such a high dpi, but even you don't go that extreme. (Why is that btw? I looked for the journal where you were supposed to have mentioned it, but I couldn't find it.) However, is their page sizes correct? What would you recommend a good page size for the standard small book manga? If I'm going to do it, I want to make sure I do it properly. Lol.

4 - I noticed you also mentioned Fruits Basket! That style is one of my favorites! I believe you mentioned the mangaka inks with solid lines, but because the small lines are darkened a lot, they appear wispy on print size?

5 - Lastly. I've also noticed you've had quite a few discussions with people about how this tutorial is beneficial/not so beneficial. Is there anything others have said that I should know? A lot of them say this isn't good to learn because of various reasons. (Most importantly it's a bad method for a picture with lots of details..?)

Anyway, I'm very sorry this is so long. And I understand if you don't have the time to answer these. But as someone who's both a noob and not a noob, I felt like it'd be better ask someone who really knows what they're doing before attempting something like a manga. Lol.

Thank you so much Ms, Shatia! This is so helpful. I've always wondered what other techniques there were to laying flat colors.

hmm, you talk about lines in 600 dpi, they wont appear or stuff like that, but my question is :"At school they thought us that going above 300 dpi was useless, then why do you consider, in your tutorial, having a 600 dpi resolution?"

good tutorial by the way

YoY ARGH! I didn't get half of those terms... dpi? eh? Not that it's YER fault... it's mine. BLECH! HOW DO I GET TO KNOW THESE?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nashya In reply to neonekogirl [2006-04-05 02:44:03 +0000 UTC]

LOL. XD It's okay. I need to make a tutorial for beginners as well. I kinda made it with the assumption everyone knew what I was talking about.

Dpi means Dots Per Inch. Or pixels If you ever zoom in retardedly close to an image in Photoshop you can see all the dots :they look like squares:. So if you tink 600 dpi, that's 600 dots per inch of your canvas, that's a LOT of.... room ot paint on XD. If you have Photoshop just go to Help and it explains a lot of this as well .

IanMeta [2006-04-04 21:41:50 +0000 UTC]

That is a cool trick, but there's something I don't understand.
I get the 600dpi for printing purposes, but why do you recommend 300dpi for web-only images? Isn't dpi meaningless if it isn't getting printed?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Nashya In reply to IanMeta [2006-04-05 03:04:16 +0000 UTC]

Oh thanks for this. I kind of said that wrong. I was mostly referring to the people who's computers can't handle 600 dpi for lots of files and for the time being do web based stuff and 'may' publish later. 300 dpi is a good start. You can resize to 72-100 dpi to put the image online though . Thank you!

My flats have always been hideous things, as I'm too lazy to take into account what it will look like without my lines disguising them.

Thank you so much for making this tutorial! It's infinitely useful to me. I re-did the flats for a picture I was currently working on, and it took me forty minutes instead of two hours, with infinitely more attractive results.
