Description 2D from Gorillaz
Drawn for coloring practice, but I just mainly wanted to draw him.
It's my first lineart done digitally in a while. They're easier to correct and cleaner - after all, you can reaaally zoom. I disliked doing them, dunno why. :\ The only thing I still prefer doing on paper is sketching

For #Critique-It
I'm not entirely sure if the perspective looks right. I don't think the shirt is folded enough - the places where it does look sort of fake, though I have no clue as how to fix it in my future art.
The big hands and long fingers are part of my style, so I'd prefer no critique on that.

Tools: Photoshop CS4, Wacom Bamboo tablet
Time: about 4 h

2D (c) Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett.

Hello ~nashimi ! I'm a critic of #Critique-It , bringing you a hopefully useful critique.

You're right about the perspective – there is something off. Part of it is the shading, but dealing with just the line work, it's more about 2D's neck. Not only is the neck too far forward on the shoulders, but the head is also too far forward on the neck. Also, different parts of the body look like they're part of a different picture with a more extreme viewpoint. The arms and the upper part of the chest look like they're being viewed by a not-so-far-above viewpoint, while the legs and lower part of the chest look like the viewer is much higher than 2D.

Now onto the shading – the part of the shading that is throwing you off is the shirt. You seem to have consistent light source on the face, the hair, and the arms, but the shirt looks like it has a different light source altogether. It needs to stay consistent with the rest of the piece. As to why the shading on the folds look fake is because other elements of the picture aren't consistent. You've used a few lines to indicate some wrinkles on 2D's face, but you've only used color and value to indicate lines or texture on the shirt, as well as the hair. They both look out of place as a result. If you add a little more detail by expanding your lineart to include not just the basics, but also cloth folds and a few strands of hair, the shading you have will look better.

Other than the incorrect source of light and the lack of lines to indicate folds, the other part making the shirt look off is where the highlights are. I can see where the folds are, but if you put a shirt on and look at your chest, that's not quite how the shirt would look. It basically doesn't hang right – take into account the physique of the character. 2D is a skinny guy, so the shirt is going to hang somewhat loosely on him if it's a regular t-shirt. If it's fitted, then the folds will be more to the bottom and around the armpits, and tighter around the pecs.

Your use of color on the other hand is fantastic! You seem to really know how to make the piece pop, and I love the contrast between the orange background and the green shirt. The lineart is very solid, if somewhat shaky, and it gives a nice solid weight to the figure.

I looked up tutorials focusing on the figure in perspective and how clothes rest on a figure, and here are two I found that I thought seemed useful:

and for the clothing, I found a list of links:

I hope all of the above helps! If you are confused about anything, please feel free to contact me, or if you want to ask me anything, I openly welcome any question!

~ Nina

Ah, thanks so much for the insightful analysis. This piece is a little bit old now, so I'm sure I managed to improve in some ways, but this is still very very helpful, especially your comments about shading and perspective. Much appreciated and will pay attention to the mistakes you've pointed out in the future.

I'm glad it helped. And yeah, I try to pick pieces to critique from the back of the folder, not the front, because they tend to sit there a while with no one looking at them.

The colours here are mad! As for perspective, considering it's a cartoony style I reckon it looks all right.

Heh heh fair enough. Well, I'm not sure if this will help you at all but I found this resource that's kind of the perspective you were using for that pic: [link] It's not spot on but maybe it'll help you decide on your proportion.

Yeah, this is slightly different since the camera in this picture was positioned lower than my intention in this picture was. But I guess mine isn't that off after all. Thanks for the help either way.
