Description
"The Other" prompt for Artemis 2203 featuring Arkies 5715.
Accompanied by "The Abnormal Transformation", under the form of a poetic dialogue:
1 - ARTEMIS
“There was a time
when I thought it an honor
to be a Spirit.
But now, after millennia
of clawing through sand
under the blinding sun,
I must ask:
Am I not weary
to have already seen
so many lifetimes?
Am I not too dead
to be this weary?
As I lay stones and flowers
at the countless graves
of the things I could have been,
I wonder if I will ever
be done mourning.”
2 - ARKIES
“Why are you so unkind to yourself?
There are stories written across your fur,
magic in every step you take,
melodies in the depths of your mind
and the curves of your spine.
Every breath you didn’t take is a blessing,
every unblink of your eyes,
a lost prayer.
The beauty you possess has been
my muse for centuries.
You are the kind of being
a poet would think of each time they sleep,
dreaming of one day finding
enough words to describe you.”
3 - ARTEMIS
“You seem determined
to drown me,
so I will survive you
the way I learned to
from undying centuries.
I will draw life into my lungs,
let your waves
crash over me,
and hold my breath.”
4 - ARKIES
“I need you to realize
that will not be easy.
This journey will be ugly,
dirty, and suffocatingly dark.
But as you tend to your bruises
and wipe the blood
from your scraped knees
you will realize that your power
comes not from your ability
to never fall,
but from deciding
to stand up anew.
There is no dream too big.
Allow our ambitions to resemble
the night sky in its vastness.
Let the stars become your playground.”
5 - ARTEMIS
“You slip the flowers
off my shoulders,
balancing the weight on my back
with practiced ease.
“Rest now,” you tell me,
“This is nothing new to you”.
I eye you hesitantly
as I slowly move to sit at your feet.
“What is it?” you ask.
“You seem troubled for a soul who has just been relieved of your greatest burden.”
I let the words echo
in the vacant cavity of my chest
as I give you a smile in response.”
““Perhaps you would expect this strength from a god,” I start
voice sad and devastatingly gentle,
“But tell me, what do you know of my burdens?
Why did you force me to know the weight of the world?”
Words flow from my mind
“This is nothing new to you
when you have spent lifetimes
watching the world go up in flames.
You eventually lost count
of how many times
you have set it ablaze
to help others find their light.
Who could blame you
for holding me like a lover
between your scorched palms
when you have watched yourself
burn for so long?””
““You beg to be heard just as desperately
as I beg for relief from my torment.
You ache to speak just as deeply
as I ache for the peace of your silence.
And perhaps my mind is right this time.
Perhaps all the years
have taken their toll on the both of us.”
“Get up,” you urge me.
I stand,
I do not know how to tell you
“We have died enough times for the rest of eternity.””

Artemis was at first a bird, back when there were trees, in a blooming forest.
An eternity ago, fire rained from the sky and erupted from the depth of the earth.
Then the forest was gone, and so was she, the beautiful singing bird.
By chance, or misfortune, she was found. A powerful soul charmed by her melodious voice.
Thus, Artemis was a spirit, and the forest a desert.
The once bird traveled, making the desert her home. She lived a simple, desultory death.
But Eternity was not kind to her blissful soul. And soon she wished she ceased to be entirely.
Arkies, her creator, was not satisfied, for Artemis was ancient and wise, they decided she needed purpose to heal.
They could not bear to part with her, such a waste of a beautiful soul, they thought.
And in an instant, the once blissful spirit was transformed yet again, with more power and freedom than they ever wanted.
With that came the anger, who were They to force her upon a path? No, she would find her own, if she had to live with purpose, then it would be by one she chose.
She knew no ill intent came from the other, their intentions guided by love and self proclaimed righteousness. Yet she turned her back on them, for now.
And so she took the desert by storm, using her immensity to shape the land to her will. She made her home down under, in caves filled with flowing sand.
Now, all can hear her singing again, under the dark sky of the desert nights.
