I like it: maximum contrast and effect for minimum added. Unlike an unrealistic full outfit or cliche sweatsuit, this allows for the agility required by Sonic while still adding practical value.
Hey, wait! This allows Sonic to do the dramatic jacket toss thing! You know, like how in anime characters with a trench coat will sometimes dramatically throw it off just before a serious fight? Like that.
