Description One of my favourites, a poster showing all species of the oceanic dolphin family. This poster was made in 2011 and as such does not include new discoveries like the Burrunan dolphin or the Humpback dolphins’ split into four species. A new, digital version, is (slowly) in the make.

Ohhh my goodness thank you so much for this wonderful comment!! It really made my day

I'm so happy that you find this fascinating, seeing all species together like this. I personally love big comparison plates too, so it was a piece after my own heart xD Still I'd love to remake it one day, in colour and with corrections to the dolphins (plus adding some new species that have been recognised!).

And that's not geeky at all - at least not in a bad way - to be honest I think your idea sounds absolutely fascinating. I love it when people take those well known mythical creatures or lore and try to make them actually viable or biologically realistic. It's awesome! And you're totally right, if mermaids were real, dolphin tails would be much more plausible that fish tails. Not to mention it just works easier with our spines as well haha.

But thank you so so much for your kind comments, they really mean a lot to me. Good luck to you in delving further into the wonderful world of dolphins You rock too!

Hey there. Thank you for notifying me of your use, but use in the first place isn't just allowed, especially not without asking. You write an elaborate copyright statement for your poems - and I do the same for my drawings. Isn't it a bit unfair to expect people to respect your wishes when you don't respect those of others? So I ask you to please remove my drawing as the header for your poem. Thank you.

Thanks very much! They're pretty cute looking indeed (even if they're all formidable predators in their own right). If you ask me the Commerson's wins in pure cuteness alone, they are tiny and so adorable!

They sure are! And I decided to make my own Bottlenose Dolphin character, Comet, and my own Commerson's Dolphin character, Pako!

Thank you! And the reason I named the Bottlenose Comet is because when I was a kid I went to SeaWorld in Queensland a few years back and I played (but didn't swim) with a Bottlenose named Comet. But last year on my 19th birthday (I''ll be 20 this year in December) I swam with a Bottlenose named Bella. I really loved her! Here's a photo that was taken on my birthday: fav.me/d8fc8ud

Ooohh how good for you that you got to meet Comet and Bella! It is so much fun to play with dolphins, even when not in the water with them. That picture with Bella is super cute though, she looks like a real pretty lady too. The dolphins at Sea World Australia are so gorgeous, I love that they have Indo-pacific bottlenoses. How nice that you got to swim with her on your birthday

Very nice collection of images and references here. I personally (if you are care ^^) would have made a better distinction between the two Common dolphins especially in terms of melon shape etc. Your long-beaked has a short-beaked melon haha. Maybe its an integrade, we'll never know.

I don't suppose you know anywhere with links to Kerguelen Commerson's? I can't really find any references to this darker subspecies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

namu-the-orca In reply to Shirukiba [2014-01-15 15:53:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Just going through the links here makes me realise how many have been outdated and are in need of replacement haha. Well, another time I guess.

Oh I always value criticism, and your is very spot-on indeed. Fact is that rather a lot of the dolphin haven't been drawing all that amazingly anatomically correct, but especially after completing a huge 'research' paper on Common dolphin markings it's become overly evident to me the drawings here are a bit ehm.. lacking haha. So thank you for the criticism, and I'll be sure to keep anatomy very much in mind with any upcoming paintings

As for the Kerguelen Commerson's, actually I do! Here's two really nice pictures showing off that grey colour: media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736… 1.bp.blogspot.com/-RN5dkBDyN5M… Though I've read up on them in one of my field guides and it says there that the greyness doesn't always have to be as pronounced as in the first photo, some animals being nearly as neatly black-and-white as their conspecifics. They (Kerguelen animals) will almost always show more extensive and less clearly demarcated black markings though, no matter the grey or white colour in between

That's a great topic to do a paper on...I'd be interested in seeing it actually, to see if my hundred year long search for information is correct or not...

Thanks for those images, the difference is quite obvious there. Can definitely see a more smudginess to them.

Where's 'X' ? Or is it considered a Subspecies?

namu-the-orca In reply to AngieWilson [2013-12-17 18:25:15 +0000 UTC]

It's explained in the 'fun fact part'! "Some scientists argue that the Indo-pacific hump-backed dolphin should be split into two species: The Indian hump-backed dolphin (Sousa plumbea) and the Pacific hum-backed dolphin (Sousa chinensis). Currently, the Indian and Pacific hum-backed dolphins are seen as sub-species. They differ significantly in colour: the Indian hump-backed dolphin is almost identical in appearance to the Atlantic hump-backed dolphin." I drew this poster as it being one species with two subspecies, and as the poster only depicts species, this one's not separately featured Thank you very much!

^_^; Sorry for not reading
And thanks for replying too =3

Plus, that is very interesting I want to agree in making both their own separate sub-species... what do you think?
And on a random note I wonder what a Killer Whale (Orca) would do if he/she ever met up with a Tiger and vice versa.... =]

s You're very welcome & btw, Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays hope yous is a fun one filled with warmth and love!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

namu-the-orca In reply to AngieWilson [2013-12-20 07:53:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, a recent study has been conducted on the whole sousa genus throughout the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific ocean, resulting in four separate species being assigned, instead of just two species with subspecies. So that's already been decided for us! I'm afraid a Killer whale will never once in its life meet up with a tiger; it'd mean either the orca is on land or the tiger in the ocean, both of which aren't very good options for either of 'em

You have a wonderful christmas as well!

Hectors dolphins are the second smallest Maui dolphins (I think that's how it's spelt) Are the smallest and are often mistaken for Hectors dolphins. Maui dolphins are so close to being extinct, I'm pretty sure there's a lot less than 100 in the world. They hang out around New Zealand (I'm from New Zealand and I saw a story on the news raising awareness that they're almost extinct).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

namu-the-orca In reply to GriffleStorm [2013-10-10 14:00:57 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry but Hector's dolphins really are the smallest species of dolphins in the world. Do you see the Maui's anywhere here on the poster? No. Why? Because it isn't a species! It's a subspecies, meaning that it is part of a 'true' species - in this case, the Hector's dolphin. So because Maui's are part of the greater whole that is the Hector's, Hector's dolphins are the smallest species of dolphins in the world. Maui's dolphins are the smallest subspecies of dolphin in the world But yeah, they are a very endangered subspecies indeed, Hector's as a whole are. Fishing gear is totally killing for them as they get entangled so easily.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GriffleStorm In reply to namu-the-orca [2013-10-10 21:16:46 +0000 UTC]

Oooooh, I didn't know they were a subspecies But now people can't put set nets out and leave them because our dolphins keep getting killed in them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

namu-the-orca In reply to GriffleStorm [2013-10-23 16:12:57 +0000 UTC]

I don't think all that many people do - media love to just speak of the Maui as a species, not caring to mention it's actually conspecific with Hector's. Guess it makes for a better talk? Oh it's great they're taking measures like that. They need it.

What about Amazon River and Baiji (Yangtze River) dolphins?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

namu-the-orca In reply to NavarroDragunov [2013-10-10 05:56:08 +0000 UTC]

They're not part of this family The full name for the Delphinidae family is 'Oceanic dolphins', which, obviously, doesn't include river dolphins. Those guys have got some wacky taxonomy, with many species there in their own family (there for example is the family of the botos, with only one species - the Boto or Amazon river dolphin)
