Description Species depicted: Lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris)
Location: Curacao, Seaquarium
Date: 17 march 2015
Tools of the trade: Nikon D90

You can't see the Lemon sharks underwater, when you're in the glass bottom boat. But seeing them from above was already plenty impressive. They are very big, and move through the water with seemingly purposeful strokes of their caudal fin. The pelicans took quite a few risks in attempting to snatch food from them, often putting themselves right in front of the shark's mouth.

Although she looks rather dark in this picture, they are actually yellowish brown in colour. It's a perfect camouflage for their shallow sandy homes, and also the source of their name. The title refers to the group of sharks Lemons belong to - requiem sharks.

Well I have read that lemon sharks have very well structured relations within their groups.

Here is the article

What a lovely photograph. I had to really zoom in and make sure if it was because you're soo good at illustrating aquatic life I wouldn't be surprised if you managed to make this by hand.Β  This is really cool though. Love Lemon Sharks they're very pretty. I think most sharks are pretty in their own right and pretty awesome too!

Hahaha, I appreciate the vote of confidence though I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to make something this realistic yet, at least not completely from my own hand :'D I agree sharks are very pretty. The lemons had an especially interesting colour, which you only really saw when they came to the surface to grab fish. Awesome animals!

Aahh, I keep trying : )
Am I inferring correctly that you have seen Lemon sharks in an aquarium before? If so, where was that? I'd love to meet them, or any other shark, in the wild too

I saw them in the Bahamas at a resort my family went to back in 2007. Then once more in Atlanta, Georgia. They were really pretty!

Oh, was that the same resort as the one with the dolphins you told me about? How cool you got to see them in two places, they really are awesome (as all sharks are).

Yes that was the same time! I also got to go on a boat and see some of the aquatic life that way in their native setting. However no sharks or dolphins where around in the wild, but tons of flying fish and a few other species with names I can't spell. It was amazing!Β
