After the sheriff gave the orders of how to deal with the renegades, everything was chaos. It was like the stampede after the collapse of the canyon all over again, with people and their horses charging every which way, trying to find cover and get prepared for their first gun fight. Jamison reined Kiefer in, waiting for a bit of the mayhem to calm down as he looked around for a good spot to hide. Seeing a stand of pine trees somewhat close to the renegade hiding spot, he decided to aim there and veered off to the right from the rest of the herd. He rode straight up to one of the pine trees and looked up into its rows of sturdy boughs. It would do. "Give me some help here?" Jamison said quietly to Kiefer, not having anyone else really to talk to, and then stood up on Kiefer's back to reach the first bough that looked like it could bear his weight. The gunfire had started, but it was off to the left, and Kiefer showed his curiosity as his ears swiveled toward the sound of wax bullets being fired and paintballs pummeling targets. He nickered, but stayed still enough for Jamison to get up safely and start climbing the tree.

Jamison was only another row up when he saw a fellow lawman on an appaloosa mare come skidding into the trees, looking somewhat panicked. "Hey fella, up here." Jamison called to him, as loudly as he dared. The other man looked around for a moment, then up in the tree, and gave a little wave. "How'd you get up there?" He said, sitting on a horse quite a bit smaller than Kiefer. "Use him as a step. Don't worry, he's not skittish." Jamison replied, gesturing to the big frizzy maned horse who shook himself off then decided to turn his attention to the mare, who was curious but wary of the stallion's affections. She put her head down as the man transferred horses and grabbed a branch, starting to pull himself up.

"Oof." He said as he was hit in the middle of his ungraceful clamber into the tree, before reaching down with his free hand and coming away with a red splotch. "Ouch." Jamison said, wincing and ducking down, hugging his own branch with his pistol in the air, trying not to get the same fate. "I guess I'm out then." "All too soon, my friend." Jamison replied, shooting back at the renegade that was charging the trees. He missed the first time, but got him the second. "I appreciate the vengeance." Jamison's fellow lawmen said, sliding back onto his own horse who seemed to have had almost enough of Kiefer's constant bothering of her, trying to pull her mane and nibble her neck.

Jamison sat up again, watching the man disappear on his spotty horse, considering the strange way his interactions on the trail had been going. He didn't have much time to think though, as another paintball whinged his arm. Best to start climbing.
