The 'Missing in action' part can officialy be removed.
After the 6th rulebook mentioned them under surviving, widespread abhuman strains, the white Dwarf of April mentioned them again among the abhumans that are being used by the Imperial Guard.
Seems like GW finally stopped the entire ''they never existed'' chant.

Yeah that moment was really wierd, i literally bought a few Kharadron dwarves to use as squats the day that merc was announced.
I did chuckle at the way it was announced.

considering some of the wierd mutations people can suffer in 40k, especially in underhives, that could work fine.
Just be prepared for people calling them 'Digganobs'

"Missed in Action" Right on.
OOh! thanx for this. I started playing in the Rogue Trader days. And I realy miss them.
I didnt play them myself, but my brother had a rather large Squat army. Even Hearth Guard in Exo Armor ... on Trike!

Remember that army to be tough. Loots of gunpipes. Stand and fire, forcing you to charge. And then they even harder in close combat

Ive been consept scetching Squats for fun, ever since 2nd edition. And I cried a sec, when they disapeared, but stoped playing at the same time 3rd came out. I even planed a 3D animated Fan-movie back then (Studied CG art then) ... maybe I should look that up again.

Forgot to comment on this fellah! Always loved this pic dude. I have a Squat in my inquisitor warband. They totally ruled and it sucks that GW disowned them!

ItΒ΄s true. Squats were first WH 40.000 army I played with, when I dicovered this game on a convention in the Β΄92. IΒ΄ve always loved comic books and science-fiction-themed games, as painting moeels, and when I discovered this sort of "retro-space fantasy" whit all that medieval, gothic and steampunk elements I was in shock. As an old metalhead from tyhe 80Β΄s I felt myself totally identified with squats and their love for Beer and Motorbikes XD.

Yeah, I miss them so much... They were one of the first armies I saw when discovered Warhammer 40.000 on that huge Rogue Trader book. I keep the book as a treasure, but IΒ΄ve got just one Squat... and itΒ΄s a custom!

I got in around second edition so squats were still about but it wasn't long before they vanished. I think they are a neet forse and add some character to the Imperium. I was pretty glad when the last White Dwarf model was a space dwarf I painted him up and like to pretend he is a squat enginseer.

NachoMon In reply to J-Sasaki [2010-09-28 17:27:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, IΒ΄ve seen that new model. Nice sculpt. I liked that concept of steampunk dwarf bikers in the future, travelling through space in their runic submarine-like spaceships and battling in huge warmachines like that old Battle Train from Epic. Sadly GW decided that concept wasnΒ΄t enough dark and serious for the gothic concept of 40.000

In the beginning WH 40.000 seemed like the "futuristic steampunk space" version of warhammer, like a sort of joke. but, eventually GW changed that joke for a darker and more personal concept. I like the current universe, but I think Squats had many potential to stand there, as part of Imperial Guard, or as an small and very specialized army just for advanced gamers. Something like Legion of Doom or the 13th Company.

J-Sasaki In reply to NachoMon [2010-09-28 20:35:07 +0000 UTC]

I awlays thought it would be nice to include them not as their own force maybe but as providing specific tasks within the imperium. Something like crew and mechanics, you can't have an enginseer for every little job but with the Squat's baground I would think they would make a good choice for maintaining chimeras and Valkeries, bashing the wings back into shape and running battle feild logistics, with their own machines to protect themselves and even act offensively if need be.

I agree about the setting too, one thing I like about Warhammer fantasy is that it seems very aware that it is FANTASY so doesn't try too hard to be super serious and I think 40K started similarly; space fantasy with a dark setting. These days they seem to have just kept the dark setting part. I still enjoy it too but I miss the fantasy part of it sometimes.

Danterommel [2009-03-23 09:47:24 +0000 UTC]

I would love to have that as either a troop choice or army in 40 k. Can you imagine you could have master crafted power weapons, add magic runes to tanks, armor, and guns. Biggest guns in the known universe....They got orks in space why not dwarfs

Ravenkeeper [2008-07-10 18:08:44 +0000 UTC]

even if dwarves in space was a little too "lets take all the races from warhammer fantasy and set them in WH40K, there was even talks of introducing skaven XD )
I always liked the story and background fluff to the Squats

NachoMon In reply to Ravenkeeper [2008-07-10 23:13:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I Β΄ve always seen them as "retrofuturistic beer-devourer motorbikers" with an slightly nordic theme. Very Heavy metal.

Ahh, the Squats. all but few remain in the universe. and due to the high gravity of their homeworld, they could not live long on anyother planet unless it has the same force of their homeworld....you have captured them amazingly...if you go to Bluetable painting they have a small Squat army for sale.
