Renders take so long! i think this is the only reason ive never really learned 3d, ive got a nvidia x2 sli setup with a 6 core intel i7, my renders should be shit hot fast, and even rendering a small patch of the screen it takes hours, how do you do it? Is it literally making sure every parameter is on something you know to work? or is there days of trial and error, rendering?
Its soo difficult! i mean its well worth the effort, your images are breathtaking, but ooof the amount of prep work seems sooo extremely complex!

It's mostly trial and error. I have some presets saved that I can just apply on certain things, and processes I've done so many times that I can pretty much do them by muscle memory, but most of it is moving, adding or changing something, then switching to the render preview and deciding if it looks better or worse. Depending on if it's just a simple character portrait or a landscape with different props and people, it can take anywhere from about three or four hours to a couple of days to set up. Thankfully, once I hyper-focus on something, I enjoy fiddling with it enough to keep with it until I think it looks decent, even if I'm usually cursing and getting annoyed the whole time lol.
As for the rendering itself, with my current rig, it usually takes around eight hours for something like a pin-up or a portrait to render enough to get the graininess out. Something like this piece will need to run for 14 to 18 hours to be clear enough that I'm satisfied. I've had to let a render bake for a day and a half before, though. I'll wait til I'm about to go to sleep before starting the render because of this. I also got myself a cheap laptop a while ago, so I can binge shows or movies or play an old, undemanding game as I wait.
