Description So every so often I say to myself: "You know what self? You need to try something new!" This time I decided I wanted to try my hand at making a custom action figure.
Here's what I did: [link]

And here's the lo down of how I did it!

Step 1: I dug through a lot of old junk in my basement until I found a suitable sacrifice for Tech's body and joints. This, so I'm told, is far easier than making your own joints. I believe it.
This Gambit was in almost perfect proportion of body and legs for Tech's tall slim figure so he fit the bill.

Step 2: I used the 'Boil and Pop' method to decapitate Gambit. It was strangely therapeutic...

Step 3: Look at the cool boots! These were easily the most difficult sculpting I did, possibly because it was the first sculpting I did...

Step 4: Pants! If you look close at these two legs, you can see that one is much MUCH thinner than the other one. Since Tech has such slim legs I needed to file down a lot of Gambit's extreme muscles.

Step 5: And speaking of extreme muscles: Here's Gambit's torso after I've done quite a bit of filing and it's still waaaaaaaay too big. And just look at those shoulders! Since Tech is all around skinny, these all had to be filed down to the right size.

Step 6: See the difference between Gambit's biceps and Tech's? Good grief, are the X-Men ripped or what?

Step 7: The arms are done! See the glove cones? Those were another reason I chose Gambit. Rotating gloves are pretty awesome and this way I have a joint already made!

Step 8: Strike a pose! Believe it or not, this is how I had to pose the figure to let the clay dry.

Step 9: Clamps are you best friend. You can see some shape going into the head now and the legs are completely assembled.

Step 10: Gambit's hands were way too small for Tech's massive hand to arm ratio, so I decided to swap them out of some of Sabre Tooth's. These things are massive!

Step 11: The fuzzys on the cheeks are coming along and the body is reassembled. He looks kinda dejected about something...

Step 12: Ears! Eyes! Tooth! Hands! All small details done at about the same time.

Step 13: Ding! And here's where I remember to take pictures again... So here's Tech, unpainted. This is about five days after I first tore Gambit's arms off.

Step 14: I used "Foamies" paper to make the triangle and belt for Tech's outfit.

Step 15: Done! Surprising what a little paint'll do isn't it?

So for all of this I used:
A Gambit Figure
Fix-it Sculpt
Testor's Acrylic Paint
Foamies Paper
and a lot of ingenuity!

I hope this is at least somewhat explanatory of what I did. In the end I have to say this was extremely fun, and well worth the time and effort it took.

Lots of work...

I've been meaning to make the rest of the team, but it's a daunting prospect...

Ur... I might? I dunno, I've been busy since I made this one. I vaguely started the next, but right now it's not much more than a torso.

I guess the short answer here is a definite maybe!

Oh wow, that's a heck of a lot of work you put into that. And I didn't realize it's an actual, fully mobile action figure. I thought it was a sculpture at first. Really impressive!

What can I say? I'm an artistic genius...

Yeah, it's funny everyone thinks that the sculpture would have been easier, but I'm not sure if it would be! But honestly what do I know?
