Thank you. I'm thinking of using the character, or someone based on him, in my stories, but I'm starting to think that it would be too much of self-insertion.Β Although, as we write a story, all characters end up being self-insertions, I guess... the writer always puts a bit of himself on each of them.

I wondered about that too. They look cool, and are real traits of horses (unlike fiery manes and glittery coats, for instance), so I thought it would be interesting to include them, for visual distinctiveness. Otherwise, he would just look like a male Octavia (even though he was initially designed before Octavia appeared on the show).

In canon we have Gaffer and Pipsqueak. That's it.
It also seems they're not to be combined with colour. Ponies with markings are always in realistic pallets.
I shall have to remedy this... but I have no artistic ability at all so as much I can design, no one will see it.

Yes, it does have something to do with his character! Head canon time!
Earth ponies are generally more dexterous with their hooves and mouth than unicorns (who have magic) and pegasi (who can use their wings as prehensile limbs). Fixer Upper, however, was born with "socks" on both his right legs. This allowed him to get a dexterity boost early in life, since he had a permanent visual cue regarding the distinction between left and right, allowing his brain to function at a slightly higher level regarding object manipulation. This makes him extremely dexterous with his hooves, and able to pick up and satisfactorily use a greater variety of tools than almost any other pony.

Since my OC is of course an Earth Pony as is my ponysona, I figure I'd say that it is great.

No matter how well prepared, things still seem to end up going wrong at some point or another. The frustration and reflection in this one is very loud. I feel for him.

His cutie mark is a swiss army knife (there's also one on the floor in the drawing), which marks him as a jack of all trades, master of none.
