Actually it's very possible that the flower garland and picking flowers may actually help. For starts, picking flowers is a fairly mindless task, and could well help to distract from the fact that the shadows can legitimately kill you. Also, my current headcannon is that the 'good' flowers may release chemicals that stimulate endorphin production in the brain, which calms you down, in which case continued exposure through the garland could be quite helpful. Also the inverse could be true of the evil flowers, releasing chemicals that stimulate production of adrenaline and cortisol, and possibly cause hallucinations.

I love how flowers make characters sane in this game, there's really no point in picking flowers but some happiness triggers in the brain... Now when I'm done speculating I think this artwork deserves a "awesome work" comment!
