Description Wow, is it 2015 already?  Sorry for more dA neglect--been too busy with work and the holidays!  But I want to start posting more regularly, so I present the Mythos: tiny, weird, slightly bio-mechanical interpretations of mythological figures!  These are simple enough that I hope to post new ones pretty frequently... plus I've had the desire to draw ancient mythological gods.  Again.

Which mythological characters would you like to see?  Leave them in the comments and I'll add them to my list!  It can be gods, heroes, monsters--anything!

Nice idea! The only thing that I dont like are fangs - looks more like human teeths for me.

I hear you!  I had actually tried lion teeth before these, but something about it seemed off.  I think I wanted a more uniform length and size.  Plus these are weirder.

I love this idea. The ones I'd love to see are Apollo, Bast, and Michael (the archangel). But I will by happy with anything you decide to do!

Good choices!  I never did Bast for that Egyptian series I did a while back, so now's my chance to draw her.  Apollo would be cool, too!  And great call on Michael!  I already have Lucifer on my list, so they'll go together well.

Very cool! I'm just thinking of the deities I have statues of on my altar. So it's a little self-centered, but yeah.

Ha, ha!  That works, too.  Most of the gods I've picked are my personal favorites, naturally.

Ooh I like it! It's a very cool idea. Of mythological characters, I'd personally love to see the Egyptian god Sobek for one I'd also like to see the minotaur among the non-god ones.

Great to see more from you again! I'm hoping this year won't be as busy.

Thank you, sir!  Yeah, I'm hoping to have more of a presence on dA this year.  There were a lot of kinks to work out in 2014, so this year I want to streamline my process and prioritize a bit better.  Bottom line: more art! How have you been?  Sorry I haven't had the chance to get back to our Sai conversation!  One of these days...

Oooh, good ideas!  Sobek would be fun, as would a minotaur!  They're going on the list!

Glad to hear you'll be coming back I've been fine myself, got some kinks to fix for my last semester in college but otherwise it's going pretty well! Just gotta get back to art now... Looking forward to see what Sobek and a minotaur will be like for this

May I guess you have no time to return to our Sai conversation right now then?

Thank you, sir!  How is your last semester going?  A little bittersweet?  Do you have plans after college?

Yeah!  I've had more deadlines these last couple weekends, but I'm hoping to get a couple more Mythos characters done in the next week or two!  I've got quite a backlog of requests now!

Ha, ha!  Well, hopefully soon, anyway--I thought I'd be able to over this last week, but again, deadlines loom large.  Winter/spring is usually a slower time for me, though, so things should clear up soon! ^___^

I do have plans actually! Heading to university after my last semester. Kinda terrified about it though

Yeah I imagine you have a lot of requests. Hope none of those will be a bother Which ones are you excited about the most?

Wow, that'll be cool!  It can be kinda intimidating, but I bet it'll be fun!

Nah, it's fun to hear other peoples' ideas!  I've actually already started on Sobek, in fact. Someone suggested Michael, the Archangel, so that'll be pretty cool!  I also got a couple requests for Sun Wukong (Chinese monkey god), who I've never drawn before, so that'll be fun!

StarGamerWorld In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2015-01-11 21:20:04 +0000 UTC]

Ooh nice! I'll be looking forward to Sobek. And yeah, University will be intimidating. Hopefully it doesn't feel too much of a step up from college. Already have enough issues with long travel times that I generally don't have enough time for a full 6-course semester I'm just glad I've got 2 left now.

I am kinda wondering though, if there was any sort of god or mythical beast that you'd consider your favorite or one you'd love to write a story about (even if more-fantastic compared to the original mythos), which would it be?

MurderousAutomaton In reply to StarGamerWorld [2015-03-23 23:33:34 +0000 UTC]

Wow, this is an old message!  You must be at least halfway through this semester by now, right?  Time flies, that's for sure! I hope you're still enjoying it!

That's a really good question!  As far as favorites out of all cultures, I'd probably have to go with Hermes and Hades from Greek.  As much as I like other mythologies, Greek just really speaks to me.  I also like Odysseus a lot.  I think The Odyssey would be an amazing story to interpret!  I've always wanted to see or make a movie based on The Odyssey, but do it in an art deco style.

I also wrote a bit for a story based on Morpheus, a lesser Greek deity who presides over dreams (the character Neil Gaiman used for Sandman).  In mine, Morpheus was a supporting character to The Sleepwalker, a man trapped in the dream world (called "Le Sommeil") because he's in an overdose-induced coma.  The Sandman's in this story, too, but my interpretation's based more on Magritte's work, and the story also revolves around his twin daughters, Vil and Coma.  Anyway, that's the long answer (obviously), but you can see some of these characters in my dA gallery, and read their bios on my website: murderousautomaton.com/ls_home…

What about you?  Your favorite god(s) and/or one you'd like to write a story about?

StarGamerWorld In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2015-03-24 00:30:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah almost done the semester now. I'm fond of a lot of mythologies, though I guess Greek and Egyptian myths speak the most to me.

As for favorite gods... well hard to say. I'm fond of Sobek myself for his form and presiding over the Nile river. Was wondering if I can get some story out of him; kinda thought the scale for a story like him would need to be increased, in the sense of the Nile representing more than just the Egyptian river and that it extends to the whole world and such. Any of that make sense to you?

MurderousAutomaton In reply to StarGamerWorld [2015-03-28 21:22:44 +0000 UTC]

Awesome!  That's what I thought!  So you're almost done for good, then, huh?  Are you excited, nervous, or both? Same with me!  Somehow Greek has always been my favorite, and although Egyptian gods don't have as much personality (literature was pretty rudimentary back then), they're just so weird that I find them fascinating!

Oh, that would be cool!  Sort of like his influence extending past Egyptian culture?  That would be cool!  I always liked the fact that Egyptians feared Sobek; I think he represented death in a lot of ways, since crocodiles were a big threat to their culture.  In that way he almost seems more animalistic than the other gods--I could see sympathizing more with crocodiles than man, and resenting humans and wanting them out of his river realm.

StarGamerWorld In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2015-03-28 21:24:36 +0000 UTC]

Very nervous about University honestly

And hey those are some great ideas! I'll need to think about those Kinda makes me wonder, how over-the-top or extreme would his story be? Like I can imagine it going many ways but I'm wondering whether to make it very action-oriented or somewhere else in tone/genre

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MurderousAutomaton In reply to StarGamerWorld [2015-04-06 00:26:55 +0000 UTC]

Oh, University, eh?  I must have misunderstood--I was thinking you were in University already?  It might be because I'm American--our terminology might be different. But you should be fine!  Are you nervous because of the workload, or more the "being on your own" college life aspect?  In any case, you've got this.

Cool!  That's a good point--somehow I see it as more dark in tone, maybe?  If he's associated with death, I could see it kinda like Swamp Thing--sort of making points about mankind, nature, culture, mortality, etc.  But of course there could be really cool action sequences as well!  I guess that's the kind of story you'd have to think about, and a good way to tell it will reveal itself.

StarGamerWorld In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2015-04-06 00:28:40 +0000 UTC]

College and university are a bit different here, but it's hard for me to explain right now

And yeah, that is a good point. I will definitely need to keep that in mind! Which makes me wonder, what would he face in such action sequences?

MurderousAutomaton In reply to StarGamerWorld [2016-01-01 20:03:59 +0000 UTC]

Wow, these are some old comments!  Sorry it's taking me so long to return to them!  I had forgotten we were talking about Sobek as a narrative character.

Yeah, I think there's potential there for a few different kinds of action sequences--maybe battles and rivalries within the family of Egyptian gods, and I would think mostly against human soldiers or workers.  I can imagine Sobek being at odds with man on pretty much everything.  Or even soldiers openly seeking him out to destroy him, since he's such a threat to mankind.  In any case, seeing him throw down would be really fun!

StarGamerWorld In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2016-01-01 20:06:20 +0000 UTC]

Ooh yeah that would be really cool. Holds that frustrating grudge with man while in with rivalries against other gods. Perhaps he can go against undead too! A god against everything unliving. How cool an idea would that sound?

MurderousAutomaton In reply to StarGamerWorld [2016-01-09 23:31:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's a good call!  The undead always make fun opponents, especially in an ancient Egyptian context.

StarGamerWorld In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2016-01-09 23:34:08 +0000 UTC]
